I bet I can kick all your asses with my flat pedals on my 29er mtb.

^You're trying too hard. Remember, this is the 41. Also, what is your max speed on the flats when you dial it up to 400 on that thing

i don't see how this is possible unless you were lifting your leg purposefully.
because otherwise physics would dictate your foot rides the pedal up as it forces your leg upward because your other foot is forcing the other pedal downward.
and i doubt you were downstroking so hard that the upward force was launching your foot off the pedal.

Not so much purposefully as habitually. Because I normally ride clipped in and have gotten used to pulling up in low cadence-high torque situations like standing starts.

The one thing that hasn't been discussed in the pedal retention debate is centrifugal force. I suspect that it is the reason why pedal retention becomes important at much higher cadences because the higher speed of the foot/leg mass results in a tendency for the foot to fly away from the pedal.

Oh yes. Fixed gear downhill sans retention??? I shudder to think.

12pages....lol...if ever a thread defined this place, this is it.

Koroviev 07-10-13 03:02 AM

No such thing as centrifugal force.

coasting 07-10-13 03:32 AM

i didn't realise riding a bike was this complicated.

It's not. Until you do a "study". Lol...

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a useful description to describe what is happening when the foot wants to move away from the centre of the rotating cranks.

Even this website

http://phun.physics.virginia.edu/top...ntrifugal.html

says this:

Since the centrifugal force appears so real, it is often very useful to use as if it were real.

Yeah, but you could do it so much better with clipless pedals.

Yes, but only if you use SPD style pedals/shoes. If I try to kick anything with my road shoes/Look cleats, my other food tends to slip out from under me and I fall down. Thus: platform and spd pedals make you more efficient ass-kickers.

RJM 07-10-13 07:58 AM

So, in the end, foot retention and clipless pedals are totally awesome....thought so.

RT 07-10-13 07:58 AM

Our Wednesday breakfast ride at work featured a discussion on clipless today. None of us are racers, and only one guy goes with clips. The conversation lasted about three minutes, advice was shared on SPD/Crank Bros/Clips, then we rode to work.

It reminds me that this thread started as a molehill and it has become a mountain.

You can't end this.

I got a cracked bong and an autographed nude picture of Bob Roll that says this thread makes it all the way to Paris.

That is some surreal imagery right there. Hilarious.

LesterOfPuppets 07-10-13 09:49 AM

Rode platforms last night.

Riding SPD this morning.

I'll still be slow.

There's a haiku in there, somewhere.

Rid'n SPD this morning
I will still be slow

At least, by my counting.

As well as ignore key parts to fit.

This is interesting enough to get a government grant to study more
