New to me Di2 7970 or wheel set?
 

Hello all, looking for some advice.

I have a 2013 SuperSIX with Rival that I love. I have the opportunity to purchase a friends Di2 7970 because he is upgrading to DA 9070, and install it on my SuperSIX. The purchase price for the Di2 7970 is $1000.00 for the full group, including pedals. I am sure this is a great price, I am just wondering if I should use the money for a great wheel set instead of the group set.

would you go from SRAM Rival to Di2 7970?

or

would you go from Fulcrum Racing 7 to nice light climbing wheel?

I've never had any issue with using the 7970, but if you love the bike with SRAM, then I'd first upgrade the wheelset. And $1000 for the likely well worn 7970 doesn't smack of a great deal to me.

wheels.. can get some Williams 19's or Soul C2's or something from PSIMET for less than $1000 and put some nice tires on them

the group set is brand new, its an take-off from a new bike. As far as SRAM, I like it, but it doesn't really matter between Sram and Shimano.

The fulcrum 7s are a pretty chunky wheelset, 1850 grams is probably 250 more than it needs to be. Buuut...the answer is Di2, no doubt about it. Why? The best you can do with an Al wheelset is ~1500g for an all-around formfactor, maybe 1200g for a non-aero "climbing" wheelset. The performance difference you'll see is marginal. Carbon rims will be faster but there you pay much more and sacrifice longevity. Otoh, Di2 will be a huge upgrade from rival, and certainly not something everyone else has. Finally, it sounds like you're getting a killer deal for Di2 - I'd pull the trigger on the group and put money towards wheels later.
