I'm no weight weenie, but....

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wrong wrong wrong. Been proven over and over again. Losing rotational weight is no better than losing nonrotating weight.

It depends on what your reason for getting lighter parts. There are 2 reasons why people do it:

1). the actual benefits
2). Hobby/personal satisfaction.

if you are looking for actual benefits, look into wheels, tires, crank, tubes and pedals.
If you are looking for hobby or personal satisfaction and just want a light weight bike....EVERTYHING else.

During acceleration rotational weight has nearly 2 times the effect of static weight on your bike. Otherwise you are right there isn't a huge difference.

My bike neither ****s nor eats.

If I did either of those things, my bike would not get lighter.

Hey B10,

Do you mind if I ask but how much do you+your bike weigh?

I know you're a card carrying weight weenie, and that you've spent a fair amount of effort (and $) to reach your weight savings. I'm just curious how successful you've been in saving weight.

In comparison, in January of 2012, me+plus bike was = 260lbs+25lbs=~285lbs

I spent around ~$1700 (net) on hard parts (Scott Addict + SRAM Red) and lots of hours in the saddle and other exercising... and now...

Jul 2013 me+bike=220lbs+16lbs=235lbs... So I lost ~50lbs total from me and the bike since last year. (@6'4"x 34"waist and a 61cm bike... I'm tall and slim not short and fat)

I'm holding back from becoming a WW, since I know a my size and weight don't qualify....

-

So my question to you is "how much weight have you lost since becoming a weight weenie and what is your combined current weight?"

In order of potential weight savings or ease:

Wheels
Tires and Tubes
Cranks
Frame
Cassette
Brifters (if you're moving from Shimano to Sram)
Brakes

The rotating parts and big/heavy stuff.

I am 175 and my bike is currently 15.08. I have been 175 for nearly 4 years now. The older I get the harder it becomes for me to stay at that weight. 5 years ago I was upward of 190 but that was muscle weight that I lost. I was in the gym A LOT at that time but lost the motivation I once had to hit it as hard as I was. Plus with the cycling I was having a hard time keeping the 190 with all the cardio.
