Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What amazes you the most?

So what amazes you the most while riding a bike? For me, it's the high speed technical cornering? When executing with the right line, right speed and lean, it's just sublime. It's very much like a beautiful carve in down hill skiing. It can also be scary so may be that's why it's appealing to me.

what amazes me? how I can go for a 30mi ride one day and feel great afterward, tired but great, then a week later a 10mi commute ride whips my ass and turns my legs to jello to the point that on my return commute I'm barely cracking over 10mph, how the hell does that happen?? lol

What amazes me is how large the performance gap is between me and the pros even we use pretty much the same equipment. I am too old to start training to ride hundred miles with 300 to 400w average power output. 40 miles total averaged 18 to 25 mph is my best.

Enjoy the most: a good 30-35 mph pull with a steady tailwind. In the zone, in the drops, still upper body, spinning the pedals. Cranking but effortless, no feeling like it in the world.

Amazed by:
How addictive this sport is
How ridiculous a cycling kit actually looks
How much fiddly, overdesigned and overpriced cycling gear there is out there that causes problems where no problem existed before and lacks any kind of durability

Last week, I did a 155mi ride with 10,000ft of climbing and felt strong the whole way. This week, I did a few commutes to work and back (46mi round trip) and I'm toast.

I find that tracking my fatigue levels through power meter software helps explain this a bit. Currently my fatigue is higher than my fitness.

How I can have the wind in my face one direction, turn around 180 degrees to ride in the other direction, and the wind is still in my face. How the hell does that happen?

I am amazed how reliable and durable my bike components are. My #1 bike carries my lard ass thousands of miles up and down hilly terrain in all sorts of weather and other than the usual consumables, only needs the bottom bracket repacked once a season and cables replaced every other season to run like the day I got it. All I do otherwise is keep it clean and lubed.

It is a lot more reliable than anything I rode in the 70's or 80's.

1) what one can do once one discovers a little thing called effort

2) how cycling components I use to think (before gettng into the sport) people were crazy for buying are now a "good deal".

What amazes me is that I am dumb enough to subject myself to that torture over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Looking down into the bottom of a distant valley and realizing how quickly I've gotten way the heck up here. So cool.

My 20-year daughter would rather sleep in and drive 2 miles to her camp/coaching job than ride her bike. That amazes and saddens me...

Probably the distance you can cover on your own human power when you ride a bicycle. I live in a fairly crowded city, I enjoy different parks, traffic and parking can be a hassle, and it's not just more fun but also more convenient to get across town by bike sometimes. And the same goes for making long loops on weekends through beautiful country. I like to draw lines on maps showing where I've been on my bike, which brings me a lot of satisfaction, but the big picture also kind of amazes me.

This is the most fun I have on a bike.

It amazes me how much effort and time it takes to climb up a mountain, and how easy and FAST it is to descend. Climb for 3 hours suffering all the way, then turn around and drop the same route in under 45 min. Still love it though.

Two things for me. First is how addictive the sport of cycling is. The second is how quickly I have improved. When I first started about 2 months ago I averaged 12.5 mph on a ride and now I am 17mph to 18mph on every ride by myself. I love to see improvement, it keeps me motivated.
