Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is bonus time at work so I decided to treat myself to a new frameset to build up. I went to the LBS with the intention of purchasing a LOOK KG461 frame and fork that they have on sale for $899. After talking to some of the guys that work at the shop about the frame I decided that one LOOK in my stable is plenty and to get something totally different. They talked me into testing a Bianchi Pista track bike and I absolutely fell in love with it!!! I won't be riding it on a track for a while so I basically turned it into a single speed road bike by adding free wheel, a front brake, flipping the stem so that it's not as aggressive and adding a computer. This bike really gives me a workout and just like they told me, it's not anything like what I currently have.

I had to actually check three different shops to find one in my size. The shop that I bought it from showed it in inventory but no one could find the 57cm. I made them look until they found it because I knew if I had to order it it would take a while to get it...another guy has been waiting for 1 month for his.

I'm actually going to ride it on the street as a single speed bike. Today I am going to inquire about taking the class at the velodrome which is right across the street my house. I do believe taking the class is a requirement before they will allow anyone to participate in the races. I watch the races there every summer. I will just need to buy an extra handlebar so I can swap bars out when I want to ride on the track. The bars that I have now have the brake handle and dummy handle mounted on them. Then all I would need to do is take my front brake off and flip the rear wheel to the side without freewheel (the track cog is already mounted).

you had better flip that stem over before the SS forum guys get on your case...

I would strongly suggest that you run fixed all the time. Its a lot more fun...and you get smoother...try standing and sitting a lot, and people behind you in pacelines will love you when you get back on the roadie.

I agree. I am actually going to flip the stem back over tonight for my ride tomorrow. I am going to practice using the fixed gear in an open parking lot before I attempt to ride like that on the road. The guy that I ride with a has a Pista also but his is the Concept. We are going to get on them tomorrow so he can show me the ropes of riding it in fixed mode.

Pista's are not as light as you would think. I own one that I use to tow the kids around in the Burly and it weighs as much or more than my LOOK Kg381.

Kevin I would recommend adding a front brake that way you can ride single speed around town. Learning to "emergency' stop a fixed gear bike takes practice and front brake will help save some skin. I bought a set of 105 brakes and levers off ebay for 50 bucks so it's not a big investment.

I agree, the bike is not that light.

I had the front brake added before bringing it home from the bike shop. I used one brake lever and a dummy lever just to put into place for when I want to ride in the hoods while riding it on the street. The brake caliper is a Shimano 105. The shop threw the caliper into the deal for $10 and the brake lever was like $15...not expensive add-ons at all.
