Look and Serrotta frames

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look and Serrotta frames

I examined some Look and Serrotta frames at a bike shop today, and I must say I was very impressed.
If anyone feels like giving their 2 cents on either frame, I'd love to listen.

I feel uniquely qualified to answer this as I've owned both makes. I loved my Serrotta of the many many bikes I've owned it's one of the 3 bikes that I really miss. I had a Serrotta Atlanta (lugged steel) w/Campy 9s Record. This was a terrific bike, very comfortable and good all around machine. I would recommend Serrotta's highly.

I have two LOOKs, a Kg481sl and a Kg381, basically the same frame but the sl is slightly lighter and has a lighter fork. Both are equipped with Campy, the 481 with Record and the 381 with Chorus. The LOOKs are the second carbon fiber frame sets that I've owned. Before the LOOKs I had an Orbea Orca. First the fit and finish of the LOOK frames is second to none and consideribly higher than the Orca. The ride quality, allthough I feel this to be a very subjective and personal opinion, is as good as it gets. The 381/481 framesets have a very traditional and relaxed geometry. The frames are stiff but still offer a very comfortable ride. The 481 isn't the lightest CF frame around, much heavier than my Orca, but the trade off in comfort and stability is worth it and the fork is far far better. The only bike I've ever owned that I like as much as either of these bikes was my '91 Tomissini SLX and the Serrotta is a close second.

If weight is an issue then the LOOK 585 is the bike for you. It's one of the lightest frames out there and when you look closely at the fit and finish of LOOK frames compared the competition you'll find they are really one of the best.

Never had a Serrota but I have heard they are of very high quality.

I second 2Roadies on the Look product. Look is one of the original CF frame makers - LeMond used them back in the 80's - and has as much experience with CF as anybody out there.

I would add that from what I can see of 2005 products, they have been eclipsed somewhat on weight, by Scott and others. But, not by much. Additionally, the frames are somewhat short in the top tube compared to others. I was able to address this with a longer stem.

I never knew that...but I was a little curious why the looks had the same geometry as my lemond...

Really I've found just the opposite with the Kg481/381. My 54 c-c seat tube bikes have 55.5 c-c top tubes. The 55's and 56's have a 57 c-c top tube.

I've got a KG486. That Look has experience with CF frames was a factor in my purchase of the frame. Customer service, you ask?

I got a sweet deal on '03 frame and fork. The fork that came with the frame was a HSC4. However, when I took it in to my LBS for assembly, they discovered that the base of the carbon steerer tube was too thick to get a race over. They RMA'd it and Look sent a replacement fork within a week.

The replacement was a new HSC4SL! Basically this made my frame a '04 model for nothing. The fork was black instead of the matching red/white for my frame, but who cares. Looks great!

It's a great ride. Very smooth and strong. I'm preparing for my first season of racing this year. Can't wait!

I ride a Steel Serotta, and although I tend to prefer "classic"
steel bikes, this is the one I reach for the majority of the time
whether I'm going out for a quick 10 miler, or half century.
If you really want to get a feel for the Serotta, go to
www.Serotta.com/forum and check things out there.
Owning a Serotta is to be a member of the Serotta family.

Serotta owner here also, they are super bikes, beautifully made and very nicely designed, no mess, no fuss, they just work great ! The ride on my steel frame is fantastic, I would not swap it for anything. Had it 3 or 4 years and it still looks and rides like new.

Could be it's just in the largers sizes. Mine is a 59 c-c with a 57.5 TT.
