My husband needs new cycling shorts. Does anybody have a favorite? (no bibs please)

Why not bibs? They're far superior to shorts in every way.

I have several pair of Pearl Izumi shorts and the chamois is fine, but they have stitching on top of the leg that rubs me raw on top of my leg. I've never had any issues with the Bellwether shorts. They are very affordable.

I like Perl Izumi, but careful with the sizing. There's a bit of vanity in there.

On a BF recommendation, I tried Aero-Tech shorts. The less expensive ones with a thinner pad.

I find myself wearing them mostly. Breathability trumps cushioning.

Not to me. I can't stand the shoulder straps. I only use shorts now.

Can we ask why?

I like Giordana, but there seems to be a fair bit of "ymmv" given that different chamois fit differently. (I also have a pair of PI and Louis G, neither fit as well). What does he have now? Do they fit him well? Of he has a lower model from X company, you could get him a nicer pair from same company. I went from Giordana Fusion shorts to Lazer bibs (ignore the bib part, just talking chamois here), the nicer chamois is really noticeable, but the fit is consistent

Honestly, sizing and fit are CRUCIAL in terms of comfort. This means you need the hubby present. Some guys might be oblivious but if you get him trying on bike shorts he will probably figure it out.

I would recommend a gift certificate at your local LBS. that way he can go a try on several shorts until he finds the one that is just right.

In terms of what to look for, despite popular misconceptions, the pad is NOT for comfort; it is for absorbing sweat.

The number of panels on a short will reflect the ability of the short to not only fit you in the dressing room but move with you on the bike. I would look at 8-Panel shorts as a bare min. There are plenty of 6-Panel short to be had at a decent price but based on the time the hubby is putting n the saddle I would suggest that they are not quite up to the job.

Also look at the gripper on the leg. A narrow elastic will cut into the skin after an hour or so. Look for a wide gripper on the legs to help spread the gripping forces and stop the shorts from...creeping.

Since yo are looking at shorts and not bibs I would suggest looking at the waist gripper as well. NO DRAWSTRINGS. Seriously. Just don't do it.
