Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not sure how your derailer is attached but I had something similar and it turned out the machine screws that attached the derailer hanger were slightly loose.

You may also want to slightly increase the torque on your headset top cap.
I don't think this will do what you think it will do: increase the tension between the spacers underneath the stem. The headset stem cap with compression plug is used for pre-load; once the stem is mounted and tightened, the stem cap is no longer needed in fact. I actually loosen it afterwards.

If it's not too hard to do, why not change to a different set or even different type of pedals and cleats and see what happens. This should at least eliminate the pedal/cleat part of the equation.

If your wheels need servicing anyway then obviously go ahead with that.

But otherwise can you make the click by riding on a trainer? Then have a second person listen and try to find the location?

Also, you said the 'crankset' was checked/lubed/tightened, but I didn't see you specifically say the bottom bracket. Was that included?

Fwiw, I've had clicks from the zipper pull, twisted wheel magnet and a broken rubber rear light strap hitting spokes all initially have me looking for a more in depth mechanical problem because they all sounded or felt like they were coming from somewhere else.

You are misinterpreting ... I meant to increase the torque during normal installation of the headset, not after the stem bolts have been tightened. And, as you say, I also loosen my top cap afterwards (this can also be a source of creak).

I already changed the cleats with new ones and that didn't help. Gonna ask friend to use his so I can test it.

I'll throw out one more: I recently had a rattle on going over bumps that turned out to be crack in a water bottle cage where the bolt goes through.

Right along with checking cable housing and the like.

I know you said you cleaned and greased the pedal threads, but by chance are they not tightened enough?

The reason I ask is that I had the exact same problem as you (click at around 10:00 on the non drive side, could feel it with my foot, only under load). I tried EVERYTHING I could think of, including installing a new BB. Got on the bike after that...still clicking. I figured due to the nature of it that it had to be at/near the pedal because I could feel it, and it went away if I unclipped my left foot and pedaled only with the right. I took the pedal out and re-greased it (again; I had already tried it), but this time I bore down on it really, really hard and got it way tight. That was last fall, and I've got 2,500 miles this year and still no click. Just thought I'd mention it.

a few months ago I had a similar mysterious click that did not go with the pedal stroke. it was the chain, I had an outside link plate coming loose and it would make noise every now and again going thru the cassette. the smaller the gear (numerically) the more pronounced it was, in the big sprockets there was less stress on it and made slightly less noise. by the time everything was said and done I ended up busting a chain and damaging the derailluer hanger.

Frick, now that you mention it, I had one of those, too. A KMC quiklink plate had cracked half way. Very glad I caught that before it let go on the road. And when I did find it I was actually taking the chain off to check the BB.

I can feel it in my feet when it happens, so it lead me to believe with was the crank, crank arms or pedals.

This is what I have done in the past week to try and solve the issue:

-LBS cleaned and greased my headset and crankset for me

I have cleaned and greased:
-chain ring bolts
-pedal spindles
-pedals
-taken cleats off and cleaned bolts, surface and shoes where the bolts screw into
-Chain
-I have swapped to new look cleats to see if maybe mine were simply old, didn't help
-taken out seatpost to clean
-cleaned and greased all the bolts in the seatpost and clamps
-stem bolts
-Swapped out my skewers with shimano ultegras and it still clicked

I dont know what else to clean or check!!! I have noticed that I simply dont want to ride this week because I just get frustrated when I hear it.
BTW, what material is the frame? I had a ti bike that had creaks when I pedal hard, it turned out that during the hard effort, the frame flexed enough to have chain rub against the drive side seat-stay.

Those little clicks drive me crazy. I've got one going on right now, but I'm just too lazy to start the whole diagnosis process.

I also discovered that, after repeated loosening and tightening, these crank bolts can crack and cause ticking when pedaled under load...

another vote for the chain. maybe a tight link, or a messed up quick-link (if you use one). I helped a guy 2 days ago who had a tight link. It's an easy fix.

I think we should have a sticky for "What fixed your click".

If the seatpost is not a good fit, it might be that. On many carbon frames these days, a shim is required to get the fit right. If you loosen the seatpost collar and the saddle/seatpost falls down without pushing, then the seatpost is too loose and you need a shim.

I had a "click" problem with my brand new bike. Turned it was the FD cable bending and hitting the frame..

I had a click that turned out to be my frame pump, which had slid down some, getting hit by my crank.

Top cap bottoming out on the top of the steerer tube. That drove me nuts for months before a mechanic finally found it.
