Single water bottle placement.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Front and rear?

If just one, then my vote-- aerodynamics be damned-- is the DT. Easiest to reach and looks balanced (feng shui-ish, if you will!)

Would you put it in her front or rear?

And anything besides putting bottle in the front is just silly

Backwards. All the data I've seen indicates a round bottle is most aerodynamic on the downtube.

See e.g. https://www.cervelo.com/en/engineerin...odynamics.html

I could never figure out where to put my bottle before this thought provoking thread. I used to just carry it in my jersey pocket (most aero). Thank you OP.

good point, that would get me more rear weight distribution. Why do I want that? because my seat HAS to be slammed forward and I have a ripped upper body (compared to the typical cyclist).

Jersey pocket... so the bike will be lighter and you will be climbing faster.

My bike came with only one set of bottle cage braze-ons. On the downtube.

I guess all of you cannot afford to hire your own domestiques to carry everything for you. That way the bike has no need for any of that excess weight. Also, the domestiques will buffet the wind and bring you lunch while you ride. Then your support car is equipped with two spare bikes and several wheels accompanied by a driver/coach and a pro mechanic.

Now, wouldn't you like to ride like this at least once?

Additional tip: Tell her she can keep the bottle...you don't want that one back.
You should offer her a ride home on your rear rack (you do have one, right?).

You likely know this, but when grabbing the bottle on the seatpost, you can put your thumb in the front and your fingers behind the bottle and pull it out of the cage. When you lift the bottle to drink leave it upside down in your hand.
