Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, i agree. I think some people have trouble differentiating wearing an elite teams jersey like FDJ vs local team kits like Jose's Burrito Factory. There are local riders and some of them would find it insulting to wear local kits if you aren't on the team. Major teams are happy to sell you a jersey b/c they make substantial amounts of revenue from jersey sales, and some local teams sell jersey's to advertise and make money also.

What I want to know is how many Professional Cyclist wear their team kits while training. I would imagine they would be SWARMED by fans(especially in highly concentrated cycling areas).

Just curious.

I'm pretty sure they all do. We occasionally see domestic pros (and even UCI pros once in a blue moon) on the local rides and nobody SWARMS them. We just try to hold on for dear life.

I don't think anyone is going to confuse me with Jens Voigt just because I'm wearing a Radio Shack/Trek/Leopard jersey. If the lack of proper aero posture and low speed aren't a dead give away that I'm not a "team" rider, my 30lb steel commuter with matching fenders, rack and trunk bag should make it really clear.

That said, I wear what I like and at first I thought I was going to like very plain, solid color jerseys ... now I realize I like wearing stuff that I like the looks of and that includes some replica team jerseys. Hell, I even have a San Jose Sharks jersey but I don't play hockey, especially when I'm riding my bike.

A number of years ago, the Kmart Classic came through my hometown. A team mate and I were out for a saturday training ride. To get home, we had to ride up one of the climbs on the course. We were well ahead of the race, so it wasn't an issue. We got to the top of the climb and were turning off the course to head home, and the fans and the corner marshalls were yelling at us that we were going the wrong way. To the unitiated, most anybody in a kit looks like a racer.

I don't do it, but I really don't care if anyone else does. I have to agree, most jerseys look pretty tacky though. If I had lots of cash, I would probably wear all Rapha, or other such classic-styled jerseys. One of my favorite jerseys is an Icebreaker wool jersey with a simple stripe.

I'm curious... (and genuinely curious, not on an anti-roadie rant) why does it not seem to bother anyone that, at least, Specialized and Cervelo have sole bike frames with the WC stripes on them, and Zipp used to sell wheels with WC stripes? I get that they're not jerseys, but as I understand, special paint jobs on bikes sometimes go with the jerseys, or sleevebands, in the major races.

I don't know. My Torelli has them and it bugs me, but I really like the bike otherwise.
It also says "the bicycle that wins" in Italian - that bugs me even more

1961 Kit. I like the simple classic look (except bare heads...well that was a different era).

I had a similar experience during the ToC. The finish line was on my building's street and went right up my normal commute route. I was wearing a backpack and riding my clunky old FG, but wearing my team windvest. As I approached the finish area a cop started waving and yelling over to me. I thought he was going to chase me off, but instead he moved a barrier and said it would be a lot easier for me to cut through to get to the team bus staging area.

I'm thinking of buying this:

Which fits into my admittedly arbitrary exception for retro jerseys

I wear certain team jerseys from time to time. Although, I work for one of the teams so I feel like I can get away with it.

And honestly who see's a guy in a team garmin out fit, or a guy wearing the champion of the world jersey or whatever and honestly think for a second that they are in team garmen or who ever there trying to portray they are.

People just love the sport and its a way of getting into the spirit. Im not one to dress up when I ride, I just put on a shirt and shorts tuck it in, put a hat on and start riding. But whenever I see a guy in kit and pass him in my hat and shorts does it really cross my mind that this guy is in Team Liquigas? or Radio Shack?

If you get into that mindset when you ride then I dont know what to say, take a chill pill, life is not so serius and your just acting silly.

I do all of this and wear no team kit stuff, because I'm not on the team and no one is paying me to advertise for them.

Not wearing the World Championship jersey is a sign of respect for the accomplishment, and the sport.

Would you wear a Superbowl ring of a team you didn't play for? Put an Oscar on your mantle for a movie you weren't in?

Seems fairly cheesy to me.

How do these same old tired topics keep coming up? How much of a #$%%y do you have to be to worry about others not approving of what you wear? I will continue to adorne by 350 pound body in my TDF yellow jersey with WC stripes and I guarantee that ain't ship you're going to do about it.

You're free to make that choice. Just as others are free to choose not to wear the rainbow jersey and conclude it's a bit cheesy to do so.
