It's a different culture, and part of the difference is the actual rules of the sport on an orginized level. If you race, you can't wear the jersey of a team that you don't race for, clothes with sponsor's names on them that do not sponsor your team, nor jerseys that you have not won the right to wear.
Obviously, those rules do not apply outside of racing. But racers will wear their own team kits when training, either because their deal requires it, or just to support their sponsors.
And there are enough people riding at the club level that either race, or have raced, that the attitudes formed by those rules tend to affect cultural norms in the broader community.
Note, I'm not saying that you have to abide by any such "rule", just positing where the norm, to the extent there is one, comes from.

What I want to know is how many Professional Cyclist wear their team kits while training. I would imagine they would be SWARMED by fans(especially in highly concentrated cycling areas).
Just curious.

I'm pretty sure they all do. We occasionally see domestic pros (and even UCI pros once in a blue moon) on the local rides and nobody SWARMS them. We just try to hold on for dear life.

I don't think anyone is going to confuse me with Jens Voigt just because I'm wearing a Radio Shack/Trek/Leopard jersey. If the lack of proper aero posture and low speed aren't a dead give away that I'm not a "team" rider, my 30lb steel commuter with matching fenders, rack and trunk bag should make it really clear.
That said, I wear what I like and at first I thought I was going to like very plain, solid color jerseys ... now I realize I like wearing stuff that I like the looks of and that includes some replica team jerseys. Hell, I even have a San Jose Sharks jersey but I don't play hockey, especially when I'm riding my bike.

A number of years ago, the Kmart Classic came through my hometown. A team mate and I were out for a saturday training ride. To get home, we had to ride up one of the climbs on the course. We were well ahead of the race, so it wasn't an issue. We got to the top of the climb and were turning off the course to head home, and the fans and the corner marshalls were yelling at us that we were going the wrong way. To the unitiated, most anybody in a kit looks like a racer.

I don't do it, but I really don't care if anyone else does. I have to agree, most jerseys look pretty tacky though. If I had lots of cash, I would probably wear all Rapha, or other such classic-styled jerseys. One of my favorite jerseys is an Icebreaker wool jersey with a simple stripe.

And inflate their tires with Nitrogen and not CO2 or plain air, and are known to reduce tire life and increase rolling friction.

I'm curious... (and genuinely curious, not on an anti-roadie rant) why does it not seem to bother anyone that, at least, Specialized and Cervelo have sole bike frames with the WC stripes on them, and Zipp used to sell wheels with WC stripes? I get that they're not jerseys, but as I understand, special paint jobs on bikes sometimes go with the jerseys, or sleevebands, in the major races.
It also says "the bicycle that wins" in Italian - that bugs me even more

1961 Kit. I like the simple classic look (except bare heads...well that was a different era).

Which fits into my admittedly arbitrary exception for retro jerseys

I'm a fan of some pro cycling teams so I'll wear their jerseys. I also like the colors of the world champion jersey. Does that mean I'm in the TdF or I'm a world champion? No. It means I'm an amateur and I like the colors. I find it funny that amateur racers scoff at people who wear good looking clothing. When you're in the TdF or a World Champion then you can scoff, till then enjoy your team kit and don't judge
People just love the sport and its a way of getting into the spirit. Im not one to dress up when I ride, I just put on a shirt and shorts tuck it in, put a hat on and start riding. But whenever I see a guy in kit and pass him in my hat and shorts does it really cross my mind that this guy is in Team Liquigas? or Radio Shack?
If you get into that mindset when you ride then I dont know what to say, take a chill pill, life is not so serius and your just acting silly.

jesus.
6 foot tall men weighing 145lb looks absurd and disgusting.
if you want to look "manly" then get your squat up 1.5x bodyweight, deadlift 2x bw, and press 1.5x bw.
if you want to ride your bike because you enjoy it, then ride the bike and wear what you like.

Would you wear a Superbowl ring of a team you didn't play for? Put an Oscar on your mantle for a movie you weren't in?
Seems fairly cheesy to me.

How do these same old tired topics keep coming up? How much of a #$%%y do you have to be to worry about others not approving of what you wear? I will continue to adorne by 350 pound body in my TDF yellow jersey with WC stripes and I guarantee that ain't ship you're going to do about it.

So if you're Phillipe Gilbert's secret love child, you can wear a rainbow jersey he gives you.
