Century riding in a T-shirt -> issues
Hi All,
So there's a charity race coming up this weekend in my home town. (https://ctcc.kintera.org whoop!) I got drafted for a business' team to ride the century. I'm pretty fine with this, except that I'm expected to wear the team's T-shirt for the race, which for reasons concerning vanity, utility, and efficiency, I'm not too thrilled about. The vanity and efficiency I can get past without too much issue (htfu, right?) but the utility is more of a problem. As of now, I'm without any frame or saddle bags on my bike, and I wouldn't be terribly excited to go out and buy any. And naturally, this uncomfortable cotton-poly T-shirt is sans pockets.
Kinda thinking I'll just wear my lightest jersey underneath the T-shirt so that I can at least carry a couple of snacks, but I thought I'd crowd-source this one and see if anyone had any particularly brilliant ideas. Thanks much for any help!

Buy a small, cheap saddlebag and rock the t-shirt.

I'd do the jersey-under-the-shirt thing....then explain to your company rep the benefits of having a custom jersey made if they want to promote the company involvement in the event.

Put a tube, levers, and inflator in a water bottle for your second cage. Tape two gels to your toptube, in a manner that they open when you pull. Wear the tee shirt and leave the jersey home. If there are rest stops every 25 miles, you have no need to bring chow or more than 1 bottle of liquid. And a tee shirt over a jersey will be more annoying than just the tee shirt.

At the very least, make sure you've got a nice comfortable base layer under your t-shirt.

Perfect! My company handed out jerseys for a charity ride, and as a result at least one of them (mine) is frequently on the road displaying their logo.

How far are you riding? 25, 50 or 100?

It's not a race. Better not to think of it as such.

100, as per titled.
Right. Better to say charity ride. It's no more so than something like "Race for the Cure," etc. I'm not concerned about time really, but I'd still like to hold a good pace.

since the ride is well supported I would go with putting th tools in an empty water bottle as suggested above, then I would get a cheapo top tube bag to carry bars and gels.

Just get a nice base layer and get a cheap-o bag as others have suggested.

+1. The OP's company must be new to these things if they think a cotton T-shirt is a good idea...

If you wear a jersey under the T and it gets hot out there, well, the T could find itself on the side of the road some where.....

Really. Suggestion for the future. At least go with a technical T shirt with wicking properties. You can even get softer fabrics with wicking properties that look like standard cotton T shirts, if the company doesn't like the shiny look.

get a super cheapo saddle bag...from supermarket bike section if you intend not to use again. wear the t shirt. I've ridden a century in a t shirt. it's no big deal.

There may be a company "debrief" after the event. That'd be the time to lobby for synthetic materials on the tees for next year.
Wearing the t-shirt shows that you're adopting the team mentality and identifying with the larger group. There are probably political points to be made by doing this, but...
...I'm still fond of the idea to cut out the t-shirt logo(s) and pin it (them) to your jersey. The remainder of the t-shirt may be used for routine bike maintenance.

I've seen people riding centuries in jeans, clown suits, you name it. I'm sure you'll survive a t-shirt...
Cheap underseat bag for your essentials is the fix and wear a base layer if you think you may have chafing issues. or wear one anyway.

Just wear the shirt over your jersey and cut a horizontal line in the back so you have easy access to your pockets without having to lift the shirt up.

After looking at the map I also recommend carrying your spare in a bottle cage. With six stops in a hundred miles do you need to carry gels and two bottles?

If you know any seamstresses all it would take is a rectangle of fabric, a strip of elastic and maybe 15 minutes to put rear pockets on a tshirt, if you REALLY need them.
I've done a couple of centuries in a tee with no problem but I think we generally have lower humidity than Maine.
Wash that shirt as many times as possible before the event.
