What is the purpose of the 4th screw hole on some road shoes? (Not Speedplay)
I'm not talking about speedplay shoes, but 3 bolt shoes that have one bolt in the middle? They are on some shoes, but not all? What purpose does it serve?
My best guess is you could use SPD pedals and just use one bolt in the middle, but it seems you would not be able to tighten it down enough and the torque of uncliping would cause problems, if you were going to do that, it seems like you would put a second extra screw like shimano does)

From Look's website:
"The memory position feature allows the retention of cleat position at the time of their replacement. When changing cleats, one simply removes the cleat without removing the memory positioner, then attaches the new cleat directly on top of the positioner clip itself. This function necessitates the use of a sole with a 4th oblong hole, of which are now more and more common on the market."
