Problem with Shimano Tiagra Shifter

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Problem with Shimano Tiagra Shifter

Hey everyone!

I had a question about the front shifter on my bike. I was riding the other day and shifted from the middle gear to the front and heard a popping sound and now the largest gear on the front shifter can't be shifted. The shifter feels like it has no tension. It will shift from middle to low and low to middle fine. I took it to the LBS and they attempted to flush it out with no success. With its age and the problem they suggested I replace it. Its a shimano tiagra triple 9 speed. Of course its a very expensive part for someone getting into road biking. They said I would need to replace the set at where between 200 and 300 depending on what I want to replace them with.

I was wondering if it was possible for me to make the lowest gear in the front (1st) become the middle gear (2nd) by adjusting the FD and the cable. Basically make the bike think its in first when its really in 2nd. Any thoughts? I'm trying for an inexpensive fix but riding on just the two smallest chainrings seems like its not going to work out.

Thanks for the help!
Frank

Your shifters are either ST-4400 or ST-4500 if you have 9 speed Tiagra. Check out ebay for a used left brake/shift lever and either replace it yourself or get your LBS to swap it. You could probably get one for less than $50.

Not the same model, but it would work. $75 shipped. I only spent 30 seconds looking so you might be able to find a better deal (or a matching shifter).

Not to be simple, but are you sure the shifter is the issue? If your cable slips in the retaining bolt at the FD, it makes a pop, and you will lose the big ring. Is the cable really slack when you are in the little ring?

Was going to be my exact question.

+1, check the cable and housing.

Also, sometimes, you can spray a teflon lube in large quantities and bring the brifter back to life.

Also, the nashbar branded microshift 9 speed should work if they make a triple shifter version.

RPK79, that shifter is for 3x10 I have a 9 speed. Not sure but the guy at the LBS said I can't use a 10 speed on a 9.

Cable is tight on the small ring... Well not tight but doesn't have any play in the cable. Also called nashbar earlier this morning and they do not have a triple only available in double. I took it to a different LBS and figured I'd let them get a shot at "flushing" the shifter out. I tried and so did the first LBS with no luck. This guy said he could make an adjustment to make it work even if he couldn't get it to come back to life. So i guess we will see. Thanks for all your help guys!

Shimano 5500/6500 (105/Ultegra) are 9-speed, you might be able to find one reasonably priced.

He may be wrong. But you may not like having different feel grips.

The 2013 Sora is 9 speed and comes as a triple, and probably better performs than your old Tiagra. They are dirt cheap here (7000 yen for a set). maybe they are just as cheap there.
