Garmin Video Camera

Contour is all but gone, GoPro has the market, I wonder how this will do. I like the face you can tie your Garmin data into video's.

Ignore typo in title...

If I did video, I would definitely be interested in this.

For Christmas I got the GoPro and its nice. I have taken it on a few rides and plan on taking on some charity rides. The video quality is pretty good too. What I like about the GoPro and I didnt see any indication of this in the article is its versatility (other than it fits GP mounts). I can take the GoPro on my kayak, mount it on the cockpit of my friends boat fishing, kid wears it on her chest trampolining, etc. I just wonder if its going to be too big :)

this new Garmin makes me think those guys advertising the new "drift" camera on the usa pro challenge this week are about to get steamrolled out of existence...

I'm a Contour owner and I'm interested in hearing more about how "Contour is all but gone". Contour makes a $200 camera that you can hang on your helmet and forget about it. GoPro makes a $400 camera that is too bulky for the helmet and is best hung directly on the bike. GoPro Hero 3 lasts ~1 hour at full charge using the lowest video setting. ContourROAM2 lasts 3.5 hours. GoPro Hero 3 is 3.4/5 on Amazon with large numbers of 1's. ContourROAM2 is 4.4/5 with virtually no 1's.

Earlier this month they closed shop.

I agree with you on the bulkiness of the GoPro. Ive also had problems with the wifi not turning off and having to pull the battery.

Damn, I've always thought of contour as my fallback if I ever decided I needed a cam..

There was also another short article on Bike Rumor. Its sad because Ive heard good things about them. They said the company most likely extended their credit way too far. The article alluded that a cash infusion could happen because its good product that moved. But then again they may have employee/moral problems since many of them found out the morning they went to work and the doors were locked.

Be nice if the computer was internal as well - or is that what they mean by "internal sensors". Seems rather large though compared to the competition.

TromboneAl 08-25-13 11:56 AM

How does it compare with the GoPro in terms of weight and size?

That's good to know, if head-scratching. The web site is still up and it's still in stock on Amazon, but I guess that's going to change soon.

I found the contor showroom in my buddies building a week ago.
They didn't look like they were shutting down either.
I swear I saw new products, & stuff they were getting ready to put out.
I walked by the suite & had to double back, didn't expect to see them there.

Leukybear 08-25-13 03:18 PM

Very interesting but I'm a bit aprehensive of buying a non-gps product from garmin before seeing some raw unaltered sample videos.

Fixed the title BTW. ;)

I found this quote kind of funny from one of the co-founders.

An agonizing feeling, that tele-tubby box of a camera haunted my dreams. The more I saw it the more I wanted to scream inside. Not out of anger, but out of disbelief that something so ugly could take over the market like a tidal wave.

Shimagnolo 08-25-13 03:31 PM

Sad to hear about Contour.
I bought one because I didn't like the bulky GoPro's.
As well as Drift, Sony is also producing a competing camera, with an optional waterproof case: http://store.sony.com/c/Action-Cam-F...ony_Action_Cam
