Selling bike

I'm selling my bike on ebay to hopefully get enough money to buy another one.

My question is, how the hell do I package it? It was my baby but I'm growing and it's time to move on. I want it to be someone elses baby where hopefully it gets just as good treatment.

I want tips on how to send it to the it's new owner. Should I partially disassemble it? How far? where do I get a box? Should I bubble wrap? What about peanuts? Bubble wrap and peanuts? It needs to be protected well.

My shameless promotion of the day:

Anyone want a full carbon giant Cfr3 with RSX STI for about $600-$700? Contact me.

You don't have to take much apart. Usually people just take off the wheels, handlebars, and seatpost. That way you can fit it in a smaller box and save money. You can get an old box at the LBS for free. There is a place around here called "The Box Store" that sells big old boxes. There might be something similar in your area....these places have been sprouting up since eBay became so popular.

Bubble wrap and/or peanuts? I guess it all depends. I bought a frame a while back and it had both bubble wrap and peanuts. It seemed a little excessive, but I was glad everything was safe. I bought one bike and it was just held in place by a few styrofoam blocks and some strings. Somehow the seatpost got moved around and it scratched the frame. That sucked, but it would have worked if they had been a little more careful.

If all else fails you can go to the LBS and they'll do everything for you.

I had my LBS package and ship if for me (Austin to LA) and they charged me 45 bucks.
The nice thing was they used a Cannondale box and shipping material which is top notch. The shipping was UPS ground.

A local LBS was packing a bike the other day and the guy had the ebay auction page printout in his hand so I asked about it. He said that they provide this as a service to their customers.

Ok, how about removing the wheels, bars, chain (don't want it moving around) and sticking it in a thin box, bubble wrapping individual parts, filling the sucker, with peanuts and sending it on it's merry way?
