Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I upgraded the brakes from Tektro to Shimano 105 and have ordered a Shimano 105 cassette to replace the Shimano Tiagra that came with the bike. With the remaining cash back I was able to purchase pedals (Shimano 105s), shoes, helmet, shorts, pump, and a mini-tool kit.
I just wanted to thank all of you for the input and am excited to be a part of this cycling forum

Is the cassette worth upgrading? Right now they have 10 spd cassettes on the cheap with a 21% off coupon from Nashbar.com. I could get the 105 for $43 before the coupon:
https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...2_514566_-1___

Or the Ultegra 10 spd cassette for $55 before coupon:
https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...2_556766_-1___

Worth it??

Nice looking ride.

If the shop did not do a fitting for you, there is great info in "Greg lemond's complete book of bicycling"

Step by step instructions on how to measure and set up your bike

I would save the new cassette for the new wheels you're going to want in 6 months. Not that there's anything wrong with those - you'll just get upgraditis

Diadora sells bicycles. I don't know what you think of them but they have a 105 equipped bike for $950 and a Sora equipped for $600.

Thanks for the tip! You are probably right. Is there any problem with getting a good lightweight set of racing wheels, along with the newer and better cassette, then saving them for race day? With quick release it's a fairly simple matter if you have two rear wheels with attached cassettes, isn't it? Keep the lightweight stuff for races, and the heavier stuff for training?

That's funny. You know I actually bought one of those bikes from Walmart once. It was ... terrible.

Nothing at all wrong with getting a nice set of wheels for your bike. If you want them for racing that is fine but even if you want a nice light set just to have that is fine too. The Oval wheels will get the job done but they are just not that good. I say if you have the funding available...go for a nice set.

If you have a cassette on each rear tire, is it pretty easy to swap tires from your race ones to your training ones and verse visa?

Now that you've got it, you might consider adjustments that will allow you to be more comfortable on the bike. You can adjust seat height, seat fore and aft, saddle tilt, handlebar height and rotation. The nose of the saddle looks a bit too tilted downward, IMO.

Have a good time on your new bike!
I ended up buying the Fuji SST 3.0 (non LE, very subtle differences only from the LE that nic_nac purchased) also from Performance Bike, and they had me ride it on a trainer while they took measurements with a special ruler and made some adjustments. I ended up with a ridiculously good fitting bike. Just took it on my first serious ride today (11% grade hill ... holy buckets!!) and the fit and geometry hit me just perfect for using my upper body along with my legs to climb. I watched my speed and I went up this hill faster than I could do a 9% hill with my previous bike that was too long and just didn't fit right. Fit is so important!!

Hopefully at nic_nac's performance they did this. If you have any fit problems, definitely take it in, and they should be happy to help you adjust everything!! I have heard they have good service, and the shop I went to in SLC was no exception.

Love it!! I'm new to this forum, too, and excited for the both of us.

I took mine outside the other day and did a photo shoot of it for the review I'm working on. When I was in the store, they had the SST 3.0 and the SST 3.0 LE, which is supposedly a special edition for Performance Bikes only. I only noticed very minute differences - tires, crankset, seat (mine came with a very painful Selle Italia instead of the Velo that comes with yours, which thankfully the manager let me trade with a higher end seat from an Altimara), C4 carbon instead of C5 (but both high modulus), and bar tape (slightly lighter blue foam vs. darker blue cork on the LE). Grouppo is the same, seat is aero carbon, rims are almost the same (big and heavy), MSRP and sale price were both the same, too. They just didn't have the LE in my size, so I went with the non-LE.

Argh!!! I forgot to do that, and they were making a nice, soothing rattling noise at high speeds on my ride today. Ugh.

Yes, and even less likely to have one in the 54-58mm very common sizes.

Anyways, congrats on the new bike! Here is a link to my site if anyone wants to take a closer look. I am really loving this bike so far, and will put up my completed review as soon as possible. The gallery has about 34 images in it. I love the look of this bike, and that it basically screams "RIDE ME" every time I look at it. That's what you want in a bike after all. Stiff and responsive frame. Climbs crazy good. Just gotta remember to lose the rattly reflectors!!
