Roller comparisons? Mag resistance or not?

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Roller comparisons? Mag resistance or not?

So after being inspired by the DIY Free Motion Roller threads, I thought it would be difficult to find some local rollers for a decent price in order to make something similar.

After looking a bit more, I found a set of Minoura Magrollers for $60 (CDN), and someone else listing that they had two Tacx trainers for sale at a garage sale. I'd sent a message to the person that was having the garage sale a few weeks ago to see if either of the trainers were still available and if so, if it was a set of rollers. Well, after I'd contacted the person with the magrollers, I got a response back that the Tacx trainer was still available and was a set of rollers (they stated with a front wheel support), for $40. I'm trying to get a picture of the Tacx rollers to see how new they are (whether they fold/telescope for storage) etc., the magrollers look like they fold in half.

What I'm wondering is whether I should be concerned about the material of the drums (I believe the Tacx's that I've seen are PVC, and I'm not sure what the magroller drums are.), and also is it worth having the adjustable resistance with the magrollers?

I'm not sure why the one person decided to have the front fork support for the Tacx (as doesn't that defeat the purpose of the rollers?), but I figure I could just take it off and maybe use it to build a second more mobile repair stand.

Does anyone have experience with both? Again, the plan is to convert it to a set of free motion rollers. I guess I could also pick up both and see which ones I like better and sell off the other.

With the mag resistance unit, has anyone ever modified one to provide a similar remote to what is found on some of the regular mag trainers to vary the resistance while riding? I guess it would need quite a long cable just to make sure it is out of the way.

Thanks.

This is the Minoura:
