Sequoia vs Sequoia Elite: how much comfort difference?
 

I'm think of buying a Specialized Sequoia, but am wondering whether to buy a standard Sequoia or spend the extra money on the Elite version. While there are several differences, a key issue I am seeking feedback on is how much more comfortable the Elite version is over the basic model, given that the Elite has carbon seat stays whereas the basic model has aluminium stays. Has anyone had the opportunity to try both and compare?

I haven't ridden both, but I own the elite and am VERY happy with it. I took it to Ireland for a 3 1/2 week trip and it was a dream on the rough Irish country roads. I had panniers with ~30lb on the back. I think the carbon seat stays and seat post really helped.

I rode both before I bought my Elite. I dont think the carbon stays add a ton but they do help. The Elite does have full 105 which was important to me and I believe better wheels. Also, I dont think that the base has pedals if that matters to you. I am very happy with my bike. Buy the best model that you can afford and enjoy.

When I was first in the market and decided on a Sequoia, I thought the Elite was enough of an upgrade to more than warrant the extra cost. You will love the bike. My main ride these days is my Roubaix Pro, but I ride my Sequoia at least once a week. Don't think they aren't fast BTW, I got my Sequoia up to 36.2 mph on the flats last Tuesday which is .3 of a mile faster than I have gotten my Roubaix up to. It is a comfortable, fast bike.

I've put 1k miles on my Sequoia so far, and I've been very happy with it. I haven't found myself missing any of the elite level upgrades.

I have over 5K on my 03-Sequoia Sport. It is a great bike for the $'s. Keep in mind it is built for comfort, not speed. I have recommended it to several people who also like the bike a lot. I just upgraded to a 05-Cannondale R1000. I cannot WAIT for the snow to melt. :)

I rode a steel frame for 35 years. It is finally showing its age and I decided to try an aluminum frame. I bought a Sequoia Elite. The Elite with the carbon forks is as comfortable, if not more so, than the steel frame. I think you'll find the carbon forks worth the extra investment. I'd also try to get the shop to replace the seat with an Avatar gel. The Milano is the worst seat I had ever had. After saddle sores and major back problems caused solely by it. I got measured for an Avatar and have never had any problems since. We rode 5 miles Sunday on a stone chip over tar surface Sunday with minimal vibration. I've only had the bike since August 04 and my longest ride has only been 65 miles, but I got off it feeling like a century was only a matter of working up to a higher average speed.

I bought an Elite last year and put over 1K on it and love it. I have to ride a lot on seal coated roads and it really takes and vibration out of the ride. I agree the seat has to go and I swapped out the pedals because the stock ones seemed a little sloppy. I didn't try the lower models but I did test a Trek 1800C which doesn't have the rear carbon and did notice a difference in the rides. That is why I chose the Sequoia.
