Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicycle black box video recorder

Saw this on bike rumor and slowtwitch, but hadn't seen anything on here yet.

Basically a looping HD video recorder that'll stop when it detects a crash (or presumably if you set your bike down). Cool idea, even if it's not for the weight/aero weenies.

There was a thread on it earlier. Frankly, I don't get how this would be any better than a regular camera. The crash detection makes it a little different, but I don't think that's a real issue. One thing I find kind of interesting is that they're marketing the video to people who are afraid of being hit, but the example footage is taken from a ride where the cyclist is doing all kinds of nutty stuff which would drastically increase his chances of having that happen.

Here's another option, although they seem to want to make it your all-in-one dashboard computer etc etc

https://www.cerevellum.com/

I guess the theory is that you won't run out of storage right before you need it. If you go on a long enough ride, your gopro (or whatever) won't be able to record the full ride.

These things tend to grow on me over time but this concept hasn't yet.

^^^ Something that doesn't work as well as a mirror but which is way more complicated. I'm curious about their sample screenshot which shows the time as 2:42 AM in broad daylight.

There is some sense in having front and rear facing cameras. Though it's a mistake to think that cameras make you safer -- they only allow you to record events so that you can provide evidence after the fact.

I think what sets it apart is the long battery life and looping the video recording constantly. The battery lasts a month (24 hours of ride time). I think if I had to commute on dodgy streets I'd probably get one, not to make it safer for me, but to finally have a chance at catching some a-hole doing something stupid.

There are more compact options that do looping -- this feature is not hard to find. Granted that 24 hrs is some insane batt life but you really don't need more than a day's worth. It's not like you'd want to leave something like that on your bike.

Catching aholes doing something stupid is like shooting fish in a barrel. As a practical matter, you only care if they hit you and the facts are disputed. Keep in mind that even with cams, you often won't pick up enough info to be useful -- particularly in the dark and/or stormy weather
