Please tell me more because I was thinking of going from gator skins to gp 4000s and I have Reynolds wheels
Thanks for any additional info on this combo.

I don't know why people are so against using levers to mount tires. When done right, by first partially preinflating the tube, getting it inserted fully into the bed of the rim, seating 90% of the tire and checking for any tube exposed, then just running the lever along the inside edge of the rim until the tire seat has worked for me with zero failures in thousands of miles.

I think it's a bit of a wanting to do it for the sake of doing it. I've only actually needed to change a tire without levers once or twice on other people's flats. I find GP4000s and Gatorskins (both kevlar bead) easy to mount tool-less on our Fulcrum and Open Pro rims.

I had a set of Vittoria Rubino Pro's that was extremely difficult to mount on Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels and the next set of the same exact tire were easy, so there's probably differences between batches as well as models.

Stelvio/Velocity/451

Try mounting Schwalbe Stelvio's 451 on to ( also 451 ) and get back to me... that is just one example. When you are out on the road and have to change a tube ( or patch a tube ) you are up the creek and that is that.

I have the same problem with 451 Velocity Aero and Schwalbe Stelvio.
I agree, they aren't a match. Maybe they make the 451 Schwalbe for majority use - which may be smaller profile rim, aka old bikes with 451 wheels, or wheelchairs. The Velocity issue isn't the ERD measurement (I once the tyre is on it's ok), but getting the bead over the rim. It's a high wall rim. I think that's the issue. High walled BMX rims maybe aren't the main focus for a 451 road tyre manufacturer. They want the Stelvio tight for regular low walled rims. This is just a theory though, one I just came up with after googling this problem.

Lets just say the LBS that sells the Pedro yellow plastic bike levers with a lifetime warranty - well they hate the sight of me!!!

The struggle to remove the Stelvio is easily outweighed by the fact that once on, I never get a flat!

Maybe its time to reduce the ETRTO tolerances. If you have the process tolerance to consistently hit to a specific side of the tolerance, that's a good sign that the tolerance range is wider than needed. It certainly wouldn't address designs which go outside tolerance, but might make them more obvious. Certainly would be a liability issue if you're designed outside tolerance...
