How My Ride Ended on Saturday

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Very common in South FL. Gym parking lots and parks are huge targets. Even in Boca Raton we have issues from the scum of Miami and Fort Lauderdale renting cars and driving up to steal stuff. In broad daylight there are smash and grabs at the dog park with people standing less than 50 yards away. Sometimes the more going on in the area the easier it is for them to go unnoticed. I never leave anything in my car of value.

Resurrecting a year old thread - just a reminder to keep valuables out of sight when parking at the trail heads. As I arrived to ride last night, two vehicles were just broken into. One women lost her purse and in the other vehicle a man lost his wallet. I never keep anything of value in my vehicle, but it doesn't keep them from smashing my window. I wrote the local county commissioners a pointed message suggesting video surveillance and signage to indicate cameras were recording, but I doubt they will support it. Too much apathy and not enough funds left over after spending money on their pet projects.

Good point. It's doubtful cops would even bother "staking out" such a small time loss that happens once or twice a month. Just isn't worth it to them.

I'm so glad this wasn't a story about a wreck you had, and a description of your injuries.

At least you have your health, and nothing was stolen.

that's messed up... sorry about ya car...

I can't say that's ever happened to me... When I go seeking out new routes or trails I never leave my car in rando parking lots for more than an hour, if that..

I will say, back in H.S., my whip got broken into/windows smashed right in front of my dad's house, so that was ****ty... got my speaker system stolen... lol...

In any case, yeah, don't let this bad experience stop you from riding that route again... I would do it again and just maybe not take the car if possible..

Sorry for the confusion, but my vehicle wasn't broken into. When I arrived one gal was standing outside her car assessing the damage to hers and the other BMW the rider had not returned to his car yet. I decided to park in an area across a major road and will continue to do so. It just pisses me off that these scum do these smash and grabs - just needed to vent.

Sucks. But yeah, happens at many trailheads where I live too. You're doing the only thing you can by not leaving valuables in the car

Hide the go pro in the trees, turn it on stealth mode and catch the bastard doing it.

Cannot be ruled out. Has happened for real, in fact that's my first guess.

I usually leave my doors unlocked when I leave my car at the trailhead, then hope they try the handle before smashing the window. My MTB trailhead has had some break-ins, but it's so busy that there are almost always riders coming or going. Sometimes busier is better!

That sucks. Time for a stakeout and a call to the police if they come back?
