Anyway it can be dangerous. I saw what I think was a rider dropped from his group. While catching up, he picked up a dozen or so riders and apparently was unaware they were behind. He passed his group who was on the side of the road and they yelled to him. He quickly hit his brakes, pulled over quickly, and pretty much everybody he pulled went into a big pile up.

It's not clear whether the rider who stopped-short was, himself, part of the pile-up (if he wasn't, he was lucky).

Stopping-short (for that sort of reason) is, especially in these kind of events, a "noob" thing to do too (and unnecessary).

I guy I know finished this in 4 hr 11 min. That's pretty fast.

That's fast indeed assuming he was riding solo. If he was riding in a paceline he rode in a group that finished in 4:11: big difference.

I did the metric, left at 7:30 AM. Quite a few people at the 2 rest stops; even as hot as it became 1 hr into the ride, we encountered no lines at the water/Gatorade coolers. Then again, most our ride (3 of us) was NOT with a large wave of riders so we never arrived in a large, thirsty group. However, sadly, there appeared to be a long line for the port-a-pots at the 1st rest stop (the high school). We elected to skip that wait and use the woods a few miles down the road. I will say though, that a couple moments of moderate chaos seemed to occur when a large group approached an intersection where, based on the painted arrows on the road surface, some needed to turn right and others needed to go straight to stay on their respective courses. It's where I saw the one near-crash all day.

man...these marathon foto yahoos are quick to send out the overpriced pictures notification...as if i want/need pics of me bonking with crusted salt on my jersey and face...

You're right! They are really fast! They hit me today. I purchased a couple 5x7s and an 8x10.

Cool that you rode with us for a bit. We were a group of 6 cycling buddies from Frederick who'd planned to do the event together - and it was cool to have a group tag along with us at various times, though we were a bit insistent on keeping the pacelining among the 6 of us.

We blew by a few rest stops. The guys were hoping for a sub 6-hour including stops - they just missed that, but were well under 5 hours rolling time.

I say "they" because I dropped off around mile 60, then accidentally did my own 15 bonus miles ... still finished the 115 miles in under 6 hours rolling time, though I confess to taking several rests around the middle of the ride. My buddies did it in 4:45 rolling, 5:15 alltogether.

I was upset that the guys decided to do that route and argued for the Asseteague route - but in retrospect, and on seeing the comments about long water lines, it was definitely the right decision.

I think I had to wait for water twice - and those lines were just one deep. So I had the best of both worlds: Lots of support (food, drinks, cops allowing us to blow through traffic lights), and at the same time, empty roads. Pretty good all round, IMO.

4:11 is an incredible time even for a group of riders.

Yah - last year it took them over a month. Thie tear - maybe 2 days. I wasn't going to buy anything from them, but my wife ponied up for a download without telling me...

Did start about 8:30 AM which probably impacted congestion at rest stops however this should not have impacted rest stops as much as it did. Would say each stop took about 15 minutes minimum to get water and supplies. Will get hotel room closer next time arriving at start no later than 7:15 AM. Course was scenic with little to no wind however I heard wind is usually a factor.
