Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You know what kills me folks. This bike expo is located in the middle of urban sprawl! Even the directions to the show are for those with cars only. How sad! ;-(

One of the exhibitors (Coalition for Appropriate Transportation) caught my eye as they are advocates for a car free lifestyle. I doubt any of those members will arrive there by bicycle. There's going to be a 30 mile ride benefitting the LA foundation? How are they going to do this? You're going to ride on the Garden State Parkway with all those trucks gong 75 Mph?? Good luck! I guess people are going to put their bikes on racks and drive out of Edison because that is a highway city! It's insane to put a Bike Show in that town. I changed my mind and may not go. The New York City Bike Expo is just around the corner and I'm going to that one for sure.

I"ll try to break through the sprawl and I maybe the ONLY soul to attempt such a feat! I will be the only cyclist to arrive at the Edison Bike Expo by bicycle. That goodness for my GPS!

I looked at the back road and that's what I'm concerned about! Those roads look like fast interchanges that lead to the expressway. There are not many roads that lead to the Edison Expo but I'll do my best to break through the sprawl even if it means walking on the grass.

As I said before, there are tons of places to put an Expo in Jersey but the location they decided to locate the event is like putting it in Giant Stadium! For those who don't live in Jersey, there is no possible entrance to that stadium by bicycle because it's literally encircled by highway.

Steve, you can take a New Jersey Transit train from Hoboken/Newark to Edison, NE Corridor Line. Should be able to bike it from there.

Thanks.

I know the station stop and intend to use that of course! (I love trains)

However, the location of the Expo looks pretty scary. I hope I'm wrong. I'll try anyway.

Hey Steve...what day and time are you going? I have the day off from work and was thinking about taking the train up from Trenton and bringing my bike.

I really don't know when I'm going to be at the New York Expo because work can be unpredictable. I found out that David Herlihy author of Bicycle: The History will be there! NOW I GOT TO GO! I've been reading his book all week and it must be signed!

So whats a bike expo like? I've never been to one.
Is there free stuff, how much free stuff, who goes(USPS team? they have a booth), is the only point of it to look at new bikes?

I went today Sunday. Didn't buy anything, but I did something better than that: got to test ride the Orbea Orca and the Specialized Allez.

No comparison between these two, the ORCA gets the nod. What a ride ! very plush and stiff, I bet it can climb like a big mountain goat, I'd wish I had clipless to really push it to its limits but even with the crappy demo pedals felt like a Cadillac with the agility of a Cheetah. Now, I'm in love, I gotta get me one of these!

I managed to get there too and it was fun! I forgot to get my book signed. ;-(

I test rode a couple of recumbents and was really impressed with the short wheel base 26 inch wheel bent (Barchetta). I couldn't believe how comfortable that bike was and it was only 28 lbs! This alone was worth the price of admission. I was impressed.

Van Dessel has come out with a whole new line of bikes and they are not 7 speed Nexus beach cruisers but real road bikes. I was impressed by the quality.

I almost forgot. I was not the only person to arrive on bicycle which was a good sign. ;-)
