Replacing 10-speed cassette with 11-speed cassette

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing 10-speed cassette with 11-speed cassette

I'm thinking of replacing my 10-speed cassette (Ultegra 12-25) with an 11-speed cassette (ultegra 6800 11-28)

Will this work? I imagine I will need to replace the chain as well. Will the shifters work or will I need to replace them?

The crankset is compact (50-34)

Thanks,V

New shifters. You need to buy another "click".

I think some wheels will not accept an 11 cassette. I don't know the specifics.

you'll need new shifters, probably a new derailleur and probably new hubs - shimano 11 spd cassettes are wider than 10 speed.

I'd suggest not doing it. You'd be better off replacing the whole drive train and maybe even the whole bike.

I don't think it's enough on a double crank unless you're making about 4W/kg which rules out most recreational cyclists based on training and/or weight.

I need 25% bigger cogs with middle aged spread than at my 145 pound racing weight.

46-36 x 12-25 11 cogs just gets us to the range, spacing, and front-shifting limiting overlap that we had with 50-40-30 x 13-21 8 cogs.

+1 and yes, check your hub. It might only take 10spd. My CK hub below would have no problem switching between 10 and 11 speed cassette because it has a removable spacer.

If you're asking this question, you should be talking to your local bike shop about doing it.

As said above, you don't just change to an 11-speed cassette. You modify the bike for a full 11-speed drivetrain. Doesn't the crank also need to specific for 11-speed too? Thinner rings for the thinner chain?

I think 10 and 11 are so close you can use a 10 speed crank. Going the other way could be a problem in some cases: using a closer spaced crank with a wider chain.

The hub will not work. 8-10 speed hubs are the same but when they developed 11 speed they increased the lenght of the hub. Some wheel manufacturers, like Stan's, will sell you a conversion hub for 11 speed. A 11 speed hub can be used with 8-10 speeds by inserting a spacer between the cassette and the wheel.
