Just a few minutes ago I was standing at a stoplight in Oudenaarde when I saw a cyclist who wanted to skip that same stoplight by riding on the sidewalk.
He had a nice lookin' black carbon "Museeuw" bike and full Leopard/Trek team kit (which isn't very relevant but still).
All went well, but the sidewalk was quite narrow and there was an old lady walking very slowly in front of him.
The old lady had no idea that he was there coming up behind her.
I believe I heard him shout something and so the old lady stopped and looked behind her to see what happened.
Since the old lady was now completely blocking the sidewalk he tried to trackstand somewhat but miserably failed and went down, still clicked in and with his hands still holding his bars.
Result: a massive faceplant on the curb.
I got out of my car (I have to drive a car for work so no hatin' please) but he said he was okay and didn't need any help.

Valuable lessons learned today:

"Don't use the sidewalk unless it's clear and you know what you're doing"
"Don't try to trackstand in traffic when you still can't"
"Always wear a helmet" (this guy would probably have been in ER right now if he wasn't wearing one.)

Sidewalks make no sense to ride through unless you absolutely have to and in all my years of riding I haven't found a good reason to do so.

I suggest you don't offer to be a witness.

I help seniors crossing on sidewalks whenever I can, be it on my bike or not. Especially when they're going really slow.
I only hope that I get the same treatment in my golden years. :)
