New Bike: Sportive Carbon w/ room for 28c: Raleigh, Specialized, other?
Hello,
Looking for a new full carbon frame/bike next year. Mix of mostly pavement and some gravel so I want a road geometry (NOT cross) with room for 28c tires on average width rims. The manufacturers seem to be way too gun shy about listing tire size compatibility so it's hard to know. For peet's sake, just list it as "most" 28c tires! Anyway, the Spec Roubaix and the Raleigh Revenio seem like good options. Slightly taller head tube and more upright position is good for my older back/neck. Any other "endurance", "comfort", "sportive" bikes I should be looking at? Specialized are overpriced, IMHO. Di2 frame compatibility essential. Coming from a Kuota Kharma that BARELY fits 25c. The bike has been great. Thanks! JD |
My 2014 Roubaix SL4 easily fits 28's. I'm currently running a 28 Ultremo ZX rear (25 front) and I'm pretty sure I could squeeze a 32 in the back. My Ultegra 6800 front brake looks like it would limit me to a 28. I'm told the Trek Domane also easily clears 28's.

My Giant defy composite fits 28c and handles gravel road touring ok.

To add to the already great suggestions, The Cannondale Synapse will fit 28's.

BMC Granfondo & Orbea Avant?

I don't know if they changed it around in the last couple model years, but the Jamis Xenith Endura did what you're looking for, in addition to having bosses for racks and whatnot.

November Bikes is announcing their new frame tomorrow, you should consider it given what you are looking for. I can recommend them, they're local to me, very customer oriented, make excellent products. I got to ride their prototype for awhile (I know one of the owners), it's a phenomenal frame .. and I'm planning on getting one myself! Wouldn't feel right recommending something I wasn't going to get myself. They aim their market at independent racers it seems, but they're for the masses. Their new bike is all-day comfort, light weight, sturdy. I think it will take 28c as a max, but they'll probably announce that tomorrow. Check it out!

Banchs Infinito, and BMC grand fondo are two options
|
Lynskey Sportive will run 28 without fenders, 23 (and some 25) with fenders.
|
You may not be interested in an aluminum bike, but just for another data point, my 2012 Specialized Allez E5 is currently wearing 700x28 Conti Grand Prix tires that measure 27.94mm at 90 psi, mounted on Open Pros. Lots of room to spare, though maybe not enough for 32s.

In addition to the Orbea Avant and BMC Granfondo there is the Cannondale Synapse. I'm not positive it can handle 28mm tires, but I thought I read it could.

"700 x 28c Tires The larger tires (up to 28c) found on the Synapse models provide more comfort, are better suited for differing road conditions, and are less likely to pinch flat." |
Great info guys- thanks! Yeah, the Jamis looks especially interesting for me. I've been using my Kuota on gravel roads and it works OK, but 200 lbs on 25c is far from ideal. I was surprised that handling wasn't more of an issue with the regular road geometry, but it wasn't, even on long gravel rides. Thanks again.

Domane works. Di2 compatible. Fender compatible. I have 28s on my Madone and know the Domane has more clearance so you should be set.

A friend of mine has the Ibis Hakkalugi (stupid name) Disc. It's a beautiful bike and tics all of these boxes. The frame runs about $1,500.
