Pwned a pickup and set a new speed record

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pwned a pickup and set a new speed record

I thought I'd reached that point when I wasn't going to break any more of my cycling records. But I did today. Average speed on my way into work this morning 7.5mph. That's a lifetime low. Traffic was light, but cycling conditions were suboptimal.

Despite the low speed, I managed to pass a pickup going up a hill. It lost traction on a steep section, and I passed on the right while it was spinning out. Smooth even stroke on the pedals wins over heavy foot on the gas pedal

Other cyclists sighted on my commute this morning -- zero. Haven't had that happen to me in Portland before.

Congrats on your new record, but I could ride slower than that all day.

What are the roads like? Ours are frigid, but clear. Snowmaggedon never materialized. You can see light reflecting off frost crystals, but I guess there aren't enough of them to make things slippery.

Light snow hiding occasional patches of ice. Curiously, no chips had been scattered when I was riding -- I was expecting to be able to use them.

Grades on the route I took in today were up to 12% so I wasn't sure if I'd have sufficient traction. But I found enough in the debris where cars hadn't tracked and iced things up so it really wasn't bad if you kept a really even speed. This is what it was like pretty much the entire way in. If it weren't so hilly, it wouldn't have been a big deal at all.

I'm on the other side of the Cascades from you. It was 14* this morning and we had a high temp of 21*. Those numbers, the fact that I've got a cold and the roads are salted liberally, means no riding for me.

But you DO get a cookie for being a manly man and riding today!

Also on the other side of cascades and also VERY VERY cold. It is now about 14 degrees outside and 15mph winds.

It was -17F here last night and it's -4F right now. Actually with the right clothing on it's not that bad. Not for biking I mean for a jog or walk. It's 'crisp' since there's so little moisture in the air.
