Question about cycling computer magnet placement
 

Hi,

This might be a dumb question but do you place your magnet for your cycling computer on your front wheel or your rear? (Mine is on my front wheel). Are there advantages to front vs rear?

Also do you use a wired or wireless computer?

Most cyclo-computers that are "wired", basically require the speed sensor to be mounted on the front fork, and magnet on the front wheel. This is really for only one reason. The wire is too short to reach the rear chain stays. Some cyclists buy an extra wire and extend it so it will reach, and they mount it on the rear. A good reason for mounting on the rear, is so that you can use your cyclo-computer while riding on a trainer. It is also a little less visible onthe rear chainstay than when sticking out the front fork, like a hood ornament. It just depends on what you prefer.

Most wireless compters allow for you to mount the sensor on the front or rear, your choice.

I have a Cateye CD300DW double wireless, which requires it be mounted on the rear chainstay, because it has the speed and cadence sensor in one unit, which really simplifies things. No wires, no fuss, no muss.

a few other suggestions to add to Patriot's good ones:

mount the sensor facing forward so that if the spokes hit it it won't get caught and break a spoke.

mount the magnet on the spoke that opposes the valve stem so that you can avoid some potential imbalance problems while going fast downhill.
