Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Ultegra 6700 Brake Compatibility with 5700 105 Brifters

I am considering getting a set of Ultegra 6700 brakes, because they are on sale, and I've been wanting to upgrade the Tektros I have. I have 5700/ 105 brifters.
According to this text, the Ultregra 6700 calipers are only compatible with 6700 or 7900 shifters:

https://www.competitivecyclist.com/sh...ke-caliper-set

It doesn't mention shifter compatiblity here, where they are on sale:

https://www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-Ultegra-6700-Brake-Set

I have a hard time believing that these calipers would not work with my 105 5700 brifters.
Anyone know, for sure?
Thanks!

I think there is a mismatch between the pull distance at the lever and the response at the caliper. I will let some more knowledgeable folks provide details. There was some mention about this in another thread recently. A search might help you. I seem to remember some information about a work around. I know this isn't terribly helpful, but others may have more information.

Here you go from another forum: https://www.bikeradar.com/forums/view...php?p=15627874 Be sure to read the last post. I think you can do it, but it is less than perfect. But lots of 3rd party calipers are used with slightly different results from the OEM brand matched set. I think you can arrange the pad clearance to give you good results. Maybe not standard pad clearance but appropriate for the mismatch between calipers and levers.

I don't know what it is, but Google provides me much better search results than the BF search function. Everything I enter comes back "No Results" no matter what it is. Anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong?

I was about to post a barely used pair of those 6700 calipers.

I have the same set up. They work fine. Funny fact - they are heavier than the Tektros. Upgrade? hard to say...

Part of it is a braking power upgrade, the other part is a semi-frivolous upgrade.

I'll trade you some Tektro R539's for them.

You're right, and I see no mention of 6700 down there either. Perhaps that section of the chart looks older than the preceding parts. I do recall that there was some delay between the release of Dura-Ace 7900 and the 6700/5700 groups... maybe that's when the rear drive compatibility was published? Makes no sense that they wouldn't update it for Ultegra and 105 when they came out though.

So, I went all (or most) of the way.
FD-Tiagra 4600>Ultegra 6700
RD-105 5700>Ultegra 6700
BR-Tektro R539>Ultegra 6700

Started out by trying to correct clunky FD shifts, so I got a deal on the 6700.
I wasn't in love with the Tektro brakes, but on a couple of brakings, it just felt
like I could do better. Jenson put them on sale and after shopping around, I pulled the trigger.
Well, can't have a black 105 RD lingering around, so I went and swapped that out, as well.
Won't be swapping the brifters. Good to go.

Should have all the parts by the New Year.
I'll report back with results.
Thanks for all the input and links.

I've got 5700 brifters and 6700 calipers, no issues at all. Stopping power is better then the tektro r730s I had on there to replace the tarnished 5700 calipers that came with the bike.

STOP! Don't buy yet. I see from your sig you have a 2013 Synapse 5. I have a 2009 Synapse 5. I switched my 105 stuff to 6700. That is except for the brakes. I bought them but the Ultegra 6700 brakes only came in short reach. My Synapse needed long reach brakes. Therefore I still have my Tektra brakes. So find out if the newer Synapse bikes use long reach or short reach brakes before buying.

It works. https://www.celebrazio.net/bicycling/...no_jp_2011.pdf Hell, I have ST-5700 with an RD-6600 that works flawlessly.
