Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Started at over 40°, 47.3 miles 1400' elevation ending temp 32°. Nice way to start the new year. I'll be ready to crush it come January 25.

First ride: I only went to the convenience store, 2.4 miles total. Max speed was 29.6 mph, no other stats captured. A couple of trips to the security gate later, and my average speed for the year is 11.5 mph. At this rate it's going to be a slow year.

Decided to head out early for some solo base miles - 85mi, 4900ft loop to Morgan Territory here in the East Bay. The roads were beautifully empty early AM. We're having an odd winter though - I started with temps as low as 29F, but the ride ended up at 68F. Had to lose my wool liner gloves after a couple of hours, but other than that I just plugged away in zone 2.

High point was was rolling into Peet's coffee at mile 65 and finding a bunch of my team mates - it was like walking into Cheers.

Happy new year all.

101 miles. Mostly flat with a climb towards the end. Weather was great: sunny with a high of 50 and no wind.

23 miles, mid 2000s for elevation, 60 degrees or so. Did repeats up a local steep half mile climb. Set a 1 minute and 5 minute power PR. Good way to start the year!

Did a 33.7-mile ride with a friend. It was a chilly but fun ride.

I didn't even think about the date today. I was a little bored this afternoon and had a road/route I wanted to check out. I'm learning my way around an unfamiliar city. It would only be a couple of miles out and back. But after riding out I didn't want to go back, and the street down to the city center looked so enticing.

I was too chicken to ride. It's a big city and I'm from a small town. All the traffic still intimidates me. I did some exploring on foot and when I made it back to familiar territory I got back on the bike. I rode a little longer but when the light started to fade I finally gave it up and headed for home. Should have started earlier; I wasn't ready to stop.

Only about 7 miles, and part of that just walking, but it was a pleasant first ride (and walk) for 2014.

70 miles in central MD, 5000 feet of climbing, from Rileys Lock up toward Urbana and back via Buckeystown, Jefferson, and Dickerson. Let the battery on my electronic shifting run down, so I lost the use of my front derailleur for the last 25 miles. Cold but clear and not too terribly windy. Could have been a worse start to the year

We rode the annual New Year's Day 200k brevet on the tandem. It started in central Arlington at the RBA's house, and went down to Maypearl. We maybe a dozen people riding, but the group was ahead of us, and we rode with one of the other ladies. Part of the route had a lot of turns and a lot of dogs, so she had some company in the dog-areas, and then we took advantage of her Garmin navigation to weave through the turns. It was cold at the start (30's) but warmed up nicely. We finished in 9:36 or so, and had a pot-luck dinner afterwards. There was also a 100k conducted with approximately the same finishing time.

We had unusually warm weather, around 50 degrees.
Despite the hangover I decided to take the new bike out for a few miles, then I got passed by a road biker, and decided to follow him.

I ended up riding 22.8 miles, lots of greenway riding and a few hills.
Really great way to start off the new year.

43 mile solo ride on a very grey day in the mid 30's and best of all, wind of only about 5-7. Add in the bonus of low traffic because of the holiday.

After videoing my wife and her friends doing their annual New Year's Day plunge in Lake Washington, I set off on a 34 mile Cascade Bike Club group ride. It started off with a chill mist but soon cleared and warmed up to a nice mid 40s temp ride. A little hammerfest on Mercer Island helped clear away the booze from New Year's Eve. Exercise on New Year's Day just feels great.

78 miles, 7,500' out into Pt. Reyes seashore. 40's to low 60's temps.

A lot of people went to the beach! Tragically, the bakery was closed, so went pastry-less.
