Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Halp! Wahoo or other cycling tool w/ Iphone 4?

So I'm in an unenviable position where I'm stuck with an Iphone 4 but it appears as if all the cadence/power meter products I've come across are only compatible with Iphone 4S and up. I'm kind of confused. I'll try and make this easy. I have an Iphone 4 and have been using MapMyRide (app). Per another thread I started, I want to sign up for trainerroad.com which uses "VirtualPower" to track workouts. Would the following be all that I need?

(Wahoo fitness speed and cadence meter for Iphone)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B0047840SY

(Wahoo fitness key for Iphone)
https://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-Fitness-...rds=ant%2B+key

What do you mean stuck? Best Buy just exchanged my 4 for a 5C for free with a new 2 year contract. Yes, I was eligible for the reduced price upgrade, but the last $100 was a promotion. If you're not eligible, 4Ss shouldn't be too pricey right now since the 5s are out. Especially with a 4 trade in. Seems a shame to buy Wahoo stuff for an obsolete phone. Are you sure that makes sense?

Yep, looks like you got it correct:

In order to use trainerroad.com's VirtualPower feature, you need a speed sensor
In order to use Wahoo's speed sensor ($60), you need an iPhone 4S or newer.

BUT...
For about $100, you could use the heart rate based workouts instead (probably just as useful as any calculated power guesses)
To do that, you need:
Wahoo Key ($60), and
Wahoo Soft HR Strap ($50) (works w/iPhone 4).

The 1st option (I think) looks to be the cheaper one if used with a free upgrade to iPhone 5c.

My wife and I are on a grandfathered plan via a friend our ours that is a Sprint engineer. I can get a new phone for $50; however, our plan would go up $50 a month.

Guess I'd also have to foot the bill for a new bike case as well.
