Weekend Cycling Reports - January 4/5

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Reports - January 4/5

Happy first weekend of 2014!! Tell us about all your cycling endeavours or other sports activities to start the year. Got pics?

Friday - 10.9 km bicycle ride ... plus a workout at the outdoor fitness equipment.

Saturday
- 50.11 km bicycle ride ... plus a little bit of walking to and from and during a moving play at the Botanical Gardens.

Today's high reached 20C and it was mostly sunny with a few drops of rain. The big challenge of the day was the wind. Just before we went out, it had been gusting over 100 km/h. Fortunately it dropped to gusts of only about 80 km/h. About mid-ride, the wind dropped to a more manageable level with gusts of only about 60 km/h, but then it increased back up to gusting 90 km/h by the end.

This was the longest ride we've done since October 26.

Some scenery along the way ...

Did 64.4km on Saturday with a buddy out to one of our coastal mountains, Mt. Soledad.

Panorama shot of San Diego from on top. A large group of cyclists also decided to ride up there.

Decided to get probably one last pic of my bike with the cross on top of the mountain as it has to be taken down soon.

We rode a 216k perm on Saturday, the Jailhouse route. The forecast was 20 mph headwinds going out, tailwind back in. One rider started with a half-hour earlier start time, and we never did catch her (saw her at the turnaround was all). Then four other riders took off and left us. And one other rider was going about our speed, although we didn't try to stick together. We finished just shortly after dark, over an hour behind the lead group. And "us" in this case is me and my tandem partner Sharon. But, we had a good ride, too. I've ridden with the lead group before, and it's a good workout, but not much fun.

Edit: snuck a ride in! 25mi between rain bands. got caught in a short shower near the end but not bad.

Saturday: puttered around for 14 miles or so
Sunday: Local climbing route: 53.5 miles, 3500', 14mph. Didn't have time to take the bike to less familiar territory. I didn't even see any cows on this ride: squirrels only.
