Canyon frame sizes?
Hello, I'm looking at getting a Canyon Ultimate CF SL 9.0 (best value for money in terms of price, groupset etc) but their frame sizes are very arbitrary. My current frame size is 54 and ideally I'd like a 55 even though that size is not common. Canyon are telling me I'd have to get a small: frame size 53, the next size up being a 56 (large), which would be too big for me. It's either of those two sizes, nothing in between...
They seemed very nonplussed when I questioned their frame sizes and were adamant 53 would be fine for me. Has anyone had to deal with something like this? Any info on this would be great thanks |
If you have a look on their website, you'll find a measuring/fit per personal frame/size. You should get right size at the end. http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3289
I was going to buy the CF SLX 9.0 before I found the Addict I currently own. Nice bike :) |
If it were me, i'd get the smaller size. You can always compensate that with a longer stem but compensating a too long top tube isn't that simple. Plus you can get this nice and aggresive possition with a slightly undersized frame. You see pros do it all the time. But than again, that's what i'd do.

Frame size is basically a random number. What you want are the actual frame measurements which are listed on Canyon's site. You can compare those to your existing bike.
Looking at their frame sizing, the 53 is very close to most companies 54, and the 56 is a little smaller than most 56 frames, so gap in frame sizing isn't as large as it seems. |
Same here, I'm a 55/56 according to some LBS's. I buy: 54cm/medium. 550mm TT. 110mm stem. Saddle height from centre BB, 730mm. I'm 174cm tall.

Agreed, the 54s I ride/choose/own have all had effective TTs of 550mm.
|
Go by reach and stack, not "size" per se.
|
Thanks for all the helpful info folks, I'll check it out.
cerealkilla: Canyon are weird, as you say they give the option to find out your exact frame size and when you speak to them that say they only do 53 or 56 as general sizes... |
Top tube lengths go 537 mm, 549 mm, and 566 mm from s to l. Pretty normal spacing between sizes.
|
From looking at this http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/...91#tab-reiter2 I'd be on a medium/56.

How my Scott Addict compares:

That's what I was thinking about the 53, by the looks of it I'll be needing a 56 from them, I'm 178cm tall. I'll measure exact sizes on my current bike.
It's weird that their M is 56. Thanks for the info |
No worries, :)
I'd say at your height, defo the 56/medium. My full measured fit sizes for your comparison, all in cm: Inseam: 84 Trunk: 61 Forearm: 36 Arm: 65 Thigh: 61 Lower Leg: 54 Sternal Notch: 147 Total Body Height: 174 |
Ha, just used the Canyon bike fit method on their website; result M/56!
|
Thanks very much for the info, I'll get all my info worked out this w/e.
It does feel weird buying a bike without seeing it or sitting on it. I think they give you a month to return it if you;re not happy with it, would be interesting to know how many people send them back ;) |
Not many I'd imagine! My wife owns a café/restaurant/English tea rooms type place. She has lots of pro, semi pro and amateur cyclist pass though so I get to look/play with obscure, expensive and practical bikes (if I'm there at the time). Quite a few of the semi pro riders use Canyon as there long distance weekend rides... They are very very nice bikes.
Are you after an SL or SLX? |
would love the SLX but will be reasonable and go for the SL. My wife nearly had a fit when I mentioned the extra 500€ it would cost to get it with Cosmic carbones :)
Am comparing all the measurements tomorrow to work out this frame size business (sad but I can't wait ;) |
It;s getting more confusing by the minute: comparing my current frame size with Canyon dimensions I ride a 53 (I thought I was on 54), it's very comfortable and am very happy with my riding position but I feel I could do with a 55 or 56.
According to canyon sizing I'm a 56 (which would seem logical as I'm 178cm)... but the worst would be to end up with a frame that's too big... really not sure what to do. |
You'll be fine on the 56. I'm 4cm shorter than you. If you look at the Scott dims I posted above and compare the 54/m Addict to the 56/m SL, you'll see they're almost identical. the only significant difference being the head tube on the Addict is 140mm as apposed to 150mm of the SL. Other than that they only differ by a few mm here and there, and the SL is generally smaller :)

Just spoke the UK distributor for ya, :) numbers on the link here: http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3293
Told him my height of just under 5'10" and he said the 56/m is the perfect size for me. His comments were to forget the '53' '56' etc and just focus on the 'XS' 'S' 'M' 'L' 'XL'. Hope that helps, now just order it :D |
thanks very much! I'm making the call :)
|
I've gone for the 56. Agonised over 53 or 56 but actually I'm ramassé (bit squashed up) on my current 53 according to the guys I ride with, and I get lower back pains every now and again so 56 should be good. The level I'm at I don't think it will make too much difference anyway :)
Now I just have to wait til end of April... |
April!! why and how come?? The UK distributor said 8 days max door to door!!
|
It is a long delay... it's to do with the frame size and crank in stock apparently. I live in France though so went through the french office, but yeah I'll give them a call. I'll call the UK guys as well to see what they say.
