Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Better than the Elites for similar price

Is there a better pre-built wheelset than the Ksyrium Elites that is similarly priced? I did do a search but I would like some updated responses...Thanks.

I can tell you one thing Kysrium owners have almost "cult-like" devotion to their wheels. So expect some resistance.

Reynolds Altas look pretty good -30mm aero rim 1510 grams- $600.

Why are these wheels (Elites) so good again?

Aerodynamics? (25mm medium V rim with 18/20 bladed spokes can't be bad)

Strength? Maybe lacing rear wheel 2x on drive side and radial on non-drive side is good for equalizing tension after all (better than all this asymetrical rim stuff, who knows?). I know about the straight pull spokes.

Hmmmmmm......

Personally, I'd rather have the Easton (Velomax) Ascent IIs. I know a college kid who scored a set from Supergo (Laguna or Oceanside) for $400 last year. Maybe the salesguy made a complete goof-up; that's a real great price.

how much does a set of elites go for? $575?

in that price range, you can get...

american classic sprint 350s [about 350g lighter]
real design ultraflys [about 200g lighter]
rolf prima elans are about $100 more and about 400g lighter...

the elites are attractive wheels and they have really nice hubs, but they are overpriced imo. in fact, i'll stick out my neck and say all mavic built wheels are overpriced right now. they haven't caught on to the fact that the wheel business has changed...

real design ultraflys: 1430g
rolf prima elan: 1314g

Read some of these reviews. Pretty good except for the couple explicit examples of really bad service. I realize there are two sides to every story and have not heard Mavic's side so I have to balance the negative with the positive.

In my opinion the service element would be pretty important at $500 / wheelset.

Also some of the light weight wheelsets such as the American Classics do not recommend riders over 190 or 200 lbs. That eliminates a lot of riders including me at 191 lbs and 6'2".

Any comments on the Mavic service for this poster?

without exception all I have -ever- heard is:

1) mavic wheels are great

2) mavic customer service is horrible

most people figure that because of 1), that 2) doesn't matter --and they seem to be right. They seem a little overplayed to me, imho

I think the campy protons and neutrons look to be nice wheels
