What essentials to bring on a long ride?

I am fairly new to biking and am logging 30 + miles per ride. I hope to move up to 60-70 soon. My question is what to put in my pouch besides a pump, spare tube, multi tool, patch kit, GU, and ID. Any help would be severly apreciated.

Hi Rob; welcome to the forums!

Looks like your all set, in addition to the above I also take a credit card, a $10 bill, a few zip ties, a foot of duct tape and a light windjacket that will fit in my jersey pockets.

One last thing, water, lots of water :)

I always carry a handkerchief or some kind of small towel and some sinus pills and Ibuprofen. Especially on long rides. On long trail rides I also carry matches in case something would happen and I'd be stuck out in the woods all night.

One other thing is some change in case you have to make a phone call and don't have a cell phone like me.

On rides longer than an hour or so, a couple of energy bars, and depending on the time of the year and/or forcast, arm warmers and windproof vest.

A simple first aid kit, ie sachet of disinfectant wipe, a sealed gauze pad, to treat road rash or cuts.

If the light may start to fade at the end of the ride, then a rear blinkie and perhaps an LED front light, just to get you seen.

A spare brake and gear cable, spoke key (maybe on your multitool).

If you are one to sweat a lot, bring a sports drink. Carbo food (bananas work well if you want to be cheap) and money to buy more during the ride are good too. I found this out the hard way when my legs threatened to cramp at about mile 35 of a 60 mile ride and I bonked at mile 50.

Happy riding :)

Bring a bunch of banana's. They not only taste good, but they are a great cycling food. I would also bring some vodka, cheez it's, snickers bars, your walkman to listen to music, little berries to throw at the other riders in front of you (very funny).

NCFR69, you live in Jax, FL! I live about 15 miles to the south in Orange Park. What routes do you usually ride?

I carry the small "key" used to open faucets that have the removable handle. You find these faucets on industrial buildings, schools, ets. All the places you might pass when they are closed and your bottles are empty.
