Getting a used road bike under $200

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Getting a used road bike under $200

Hello guys,

I am planning to get a used road bike. My budget is $200.
I'm really not sure what to look for in a used bike. My main use of it is small commuting from home to school and also to do some medium trails.

Here are some of what I might be interested in on CL.
https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bik/4299069435.html
https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bik/4298027237.html

I'm quite interested in this one - I think I can spend a little bit on the gears and the tuneup.
https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bik/4287287542.html

Can anyone give some suggestions?

I really appreciate it!

Thanks!

+1 on the Peugeot. The Schwinn is way too big. I was about to say just grab the Denali and ride the heck out of it...but then I noticed the repair needed.

It depends manufacturer to manufacturer. I'd look for medium frames, around 54cm. But sizing can really vary manufacturer to manufacturer.

Stay away from the GMC Denali. I've heard several in bike industry have expressed safety concerns with the way it's brakes are done.

Check out SOPO, the bike cooperative down near Grant Park.

They often fix up old bikes and re-sell I think.

Also Beltline Bicycle on the eastside trail.

They have lots of classic bikes like the Peugeot and Schwinn you originally linked.

GT Starter Bikes (Working bikes range from $50-$150 depending on quality.)
Starter Bikes is a collaborative project with Georgia Tech's Students Organizing for Sustainability and the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. Volunteers refurbish abandoned and donated bikes into low-cost, entry level bicycles for students and community members in need of inexpensive but reliable transportation. The program is also available for people who would like to try a bike, but don't want to make a large up-front investment until they have more experience.

Talk to Bicycle South near Emory/Decatur. They run special student discount programs with Emory U. I think I've seen a $350 price in the past, which stretches your budget. But it would likely be newer and appropriate. They might have other options.

OP, the 3 bikes you listed are all terrible. Spend a bit more time looking. Patience can go a long way in finding a good deal. You can get quite a decent bike for $200 if you look long enough.

the guy selling the schwinn is a bike flipper, at best. don't buy from him. bookmark one of his ads, write down/save his number. he has multiple ads on your CL. the puegeot would be acceptable as a starter bike. but, if you're planning on hitting some trails, if you mean off road, you'll want a hybrid/mountain type bike. and a U LOCK. get a U LOCK.
