Topic of Resale value
 

I see a lot of guys offer up to questions about "what do I get" with well frame yadd yadda has a better resale value. How many of you A. know what t will be years down the road, if so how?
B. Do you actually use it as a consideration when buying?
Never once crossed my mind.....sold many on craiglist for what I felt was fair.

I sort of take it into consideration. For example, I imagine myself as if I were to need the money one day. I say to myself what is my best choice if I had to sell. I've done this with motorcycles and to a great extent I've succeeded. I usually lose close to nothing on my resales. I've even made money on some. That being said I am a business man and I look at everything in a ROI POV. So even for girlfriends, food and time I do all of sorts of calculations.. in short, businesses don't like me.

PS. Courtesy and service go a long way though and unlike a lot of people, I am willing to pay handsomely for that.

We all know what the value will be years from now in most cases. Just try and buy a second hand Colnago vs. a Fuji. Nothing wrong with either brand but the Colnago will fetch a nice high price if you can even find what you are looking for.

I like to own things that other people want, (I am that insecure) so I must follow the above rule.

I think you might be surprised to find that the depreciation and cost of ownership of the Colnago with mid level components would surpass the Fuji.

If we're talking about mid-range/non-halo bikes, there's not as great a used market for overpriced vanity bikes as one might think. Mrs. Fred's Colnago as a case in point. A $3,500-4,000rrp, 105 equipped bike purchased for less than 40% of rrp less than 24months after initial purchase. A comparable Giant could have been purchased new for $1,500-2,000 and were demanding $800-1,200 on the used market at the same time. The cost of ownership to the original owner of her Colnago was far greater than what he will probably have experienced with the TCR that he replaced it with.

I buy a bike that fits me well, performs, and is fun to ride. Then I ride the crap out of it. It hasn't been common for me to sell one. (Gave an old one away, one was stolen, traded one for a different bike when my needs changed.) If I do, I'm usually more interested in being done with it than how to get every last penny in the sale, I got my money out of it by riding a lot. On top of all that, bikes depreciate quickly, all of them. So no, resale value isn't something I think about when buying a bike.

I don't tend to worry about resale value as I tend to keep my possessions a low time. I sold my last hybrids after 18 years and my last car after 20 years. At 65 with a bad ticker I figure I won't be selling either my 11 TCR Composite or my RX 0….. guess they will be yard sale items after the fact:lol:

I don't worry about it. I tend to keep frames for a long time and I ride the components until they're worn out or broken.

I'd rather get a good deal on a used bike because of its low resale value than anything else.
