Trainer cadence, or is it just me?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trainer cadence, or is it just me?

For a number of reasons, not least of which, it is pretty flipping cold in Colorado lately, I have been riding on the trainer for the past couple of months. Although I mix up the gearing and intensity a fair bit, do some timed intervals, and usually ride from 70 to 90 minutes, I'm having loads of trouble keeping my average cadence up.

On the assumption that an average speed of 20 mph on the trainer is the same wattage output whether the cadence is 75 or 90, why am I much more able to hit it at the lower cadence, higher gear, than the higher cadence, lower gear?

If it matters, the trainer is a CycleOps Fluid2.

Because on the trainer, you are constantly spinning. You will get used to it.

Maybe you are more comfortable grinding a higher gear then higher cadence. It's probably perception, but wear a heart rate monitor next time. See which method results in a higher heart rate.
