Converting Giant FCR3 to dropbars
 
Hi,

I have a Giant FCR3 (2008) hybrid and I'm looking to swap over to drop bars. I know theres probably more to it than I realise but I'm looking for a bit of advice on what I HAVE to change out and what I could change later. I'm on a budget and would like to change the other parts over gradually after the bars.

Current bike specs

At the minute I'm looking at changing -

Bars (obviously) Pro LT
Shifters - Currently looking at these or used Sora STI's to keep costs down.

Later?
Bottom Bracket/Chainset - Tiagra
Cassette - Tiagra

Like I say I may be wrong on what I have to change but I am new at making any component changes to the bike myself. Any advice on compatibility issues or alternatives appreciated.

First off, the bike you linked has an 8speed cassette, the shifters you linked are 9 speed. Sora has been 9speed for quite awhile I think.

Don't waste your money. Keep the giant as a backup bike. Keep building your bike fund and buy a new road bike already setup with drop bar and STI levers.

I've got a 2008 FCR3 that was my first bike when I got into cycling, and I've done what you're contemplating to change it into a fast commuter. You'll need bars, shifters, and a doo-hicky called a "Travel Agent" (one per wheel) to correct the brake pull to use the stock V-brakes. I also swapped out the stock 11-32 cassette for a 13-26.

Check with your LBS for used shifters. I found some old RSX eight speed shifters for a triple that work perfectly for $50. No reason to swap out the derailleurs, they work perfectly.

The bike has eyelets for for front and rear racks and fenders. It'd make a good touring bike as well as a commuter.

I recommend going no farther than this. If you want a road bike for fast rides, you'd be better off finding a used Trek 1.x or Specialized Allez or something similar. It'd be cheaper and better suited to the task.

Thanks for that, I am keeping my eye out for 8 speed shifters as it looks like a much more cost effective way to go.

Any reason you changed the cassette? I did think about doing this for the 10 speed but didn't know if I could do that? That would probably make finding shifters easier as well.

You can find a set of 8 speed sti shifters on Amazon fairly cheap. I'm looking into converting my bike with DT shifters to sti 7 speed.

I changed the cassette to give smaller gaps between shifts so I can keep a steadier cadence. Cassettes wear out with normal use, just like tires and chains, and they're easily changeable if you have the tools. You'll have to keep it eight speed unless you change the shifters and rear derailleur. Also, cassettes take longer to wear out than other parts; it's not like you have to replace them a couple a times a year, more like every two-three chains or so.

I've managed to get myself some Triple 8 speed shifters and I'm going to order the bars now. For under $80 for the 2 I think it's worth a go. Gives me a little project.

I've read some comments from others that have done this conversion about the stem length and ride position. Let's see how it goes. Did you have any issues revchuck?

No, but the bike sat in storage for three years while I got into road bikes, and by then I had been fitted to my road bikes and had bits and pieces hanging around to get the FCR3 to match up with my road bike measurements. This is something you'll have to deal with when you get the bike together. The stock stem should put you in the ballpark for height, but the reach will probably change; also, your riding position will change. I recommend you ask around among the road and/or racing cyclists in your area and see which shop has the best reputation for fitting, and go there for their "basic" fitting. This is something that is often ignored or dismissed as unimportant, but is the most important and cost-effective improvement you can buy.
