Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do agree, the battery was very large! But, a seat tube battery pack would solve that issue.

My first SR11 EPS kit, minus the crankset and EPS disconnect tool came out to $2404 via Ribble.
Wow, you got a great deal! They're listing it at $3,712.49 now. Was it a christmas deal?

I bought it early spring of '13 because my Ridley was getting painted at the time. I'm sure Ribble had some type of discount code and the £ was weaker at the time as well.

Are you comparing it to Di2 9070 or 7970? I can only compare 6700 to 9000 in mechanical terms and I will say 9000 is better than Di6770. I don't really know how it could get any better than 9000... It is insanely good. I guess what I don't know doesn't hurt me right?...

I've ridden them both. From the experience I had, the campy was smoother. As Primov8 said, Both great and essentially do the same thing. I wouldn't turn down either. If I was given both for free, I'd probably do Campy just because it is lighter. If weight wasn't even a consideration I would just go with Di2 because I think it looks better.

Sounds good. I like how EPS looks better to be honest. If I had the $$ I'd probably do Campy but I still consider 9000 surreal. There IS a pretty BIG difference between 6700 and 9000. I have about 5k miles on 6700 and 400 miles on 9000. And I always say "I don't see why I would need anything othen than this, it works great!" when I ride the 6700. Then I ride the 9000 and I say "THIS IS WHY!".

Still, I've heard front shifting on DA is still better than campy . Even the mechanical version is TOO fast for me.

the OP makes it sound so good that i'm wanting to switch back to a multispeed from my singlespeeds just so i can savor the experience. hmmmm... maybe i'll trade in my oldschool alpine skis and get a snowboard too while i'm at it.

I think if I were building up a bike on an unlimited budget, I'd go Campy. I'd really like an opportunity to test ride some of it.

Here recently I've been thinking of upgrading my 6700. A 6800 upgrade kit would be quick and efficient and the cheapest option, but the idea of upgrading to a Campy groupo keeps nagging at me. Regardless of if I switch to 6800 or Campy, I'll need new wheels fit for 11-speed. The switch to Campy would require a new crankset as well though.

Not a fan of the hood ergonomics on my 6700 unless I'm riding gloveless. Any upgrade (or downgrade to 5700 shifters) would provide a better feel in regards to the hood ergonomics.

Not entirely true. Depends on your current wheels, or more specifically rear hub. You may be able to put a Campy free hub body on there. This is exactly what I just did. The flip side of that is if you go 11s Shimano, then you most certainly will need new wheels, unless they are already 11s Shimano ready, which based on your post, is probably not the case.

According to Lennard Zinn (on Velonews) a Campy 11-speed wheel/cassette shifts perfectly with a Shimano 11-speed group. More food for thought.

Not even remotely similar. But Shimano wants you to think that.

I have heard that as well. I was going on the assumption that he does not have wheels equipped to work with 11s Shimano though.

Pretty funny- Di2 threads are usually a bunch of Di2 owners saying how good it is and a bunch of people who haven't ridden it saying it can't be that good. Now it's SR EPS being better than Di2, and uhh...color me skeptical Campy, like Shimano, definitely has a lot on the table that they can improve upon- the battery/"brain box" architecture comes to mind. And to nitpick, who cares if the Campy battery charges faster and lasts longer? The Shimano battery already takes a negligible amount of time to charge and battery life is more than adequate (oddly, Shimano lists a range of 600-1500 depending on conditions and number of shifts, Campy just says 1400 miles).

Either way, good that two of the big three are competing so well in electronic and glad Bianchi got to get some hands-on time to form an opinion.

So wait.. that is actually a pretty smart marketing strategy. They give you the option of thumb shifters in their least best group so you think that the other company thumb shifter will work similarly. Good deceptive tactic! I still stand behind dura ace. IMO Italian stuff is highly overrated. Not to say they aren't good, they are, but simply not 2x better than the rest.

Encouraging.

I have Mavic Aksium WTS wheels. Would a stock FSA SL-K light Crankset be Campy compatible? If so, all I'd need to upgrade are the same parts that I'd need for 6800.

I'm looking at having some handbuilts built sometime this year. I could designate that hub specifically for Campy or Shimano compatibility. Curious to if Campy 11 speed would work on my Mavics. If so, I could utilize both wheelsets. If not, I'd be limited to one wheelset if I decide to go 11 speed.

EDIT: I do not currently have 11-speed compatible wheels. Ideally, I'd like to setup a Campy CAAD10 for riding every day and a Shimano 11 speed CX or rain bike. If the wheels could be compatible between bikes, it would make my purchase of Campy more likely.

Cranksets don't need to be compatible. I use a 1988 Sugino crankset on one of my Campy-10 bikes.

There could be some oddball exceptions, such as trying to use a 10-speed crank with an old 5 speed drivetrain in which the chain might be too wide for the chainring spacing.

Your wheels can be made Campy 11 ready, but not Shimano 11. The wheels I just put a Campy free hub body on are Mavic Aksiums.

I've always like mechanical Campy over Shimano, haven't tried out the electrical Campy stuff but I don't like the appearance.

I'm still a generation or 2 away from ditching my mechanical, but when electric can feed information into a cyclocomputer it'll be well worth the investment. Mixed with a power meter, it will change the way people ride. After a few miles, it'll know the optimal gearings for most situations and be able to suggest when to shift, what to work on, etc.

Interesting. I always wondered how Praxis chainrings seem to work with all drive trains, but then people say don't put a SRAM gearset into a Shimano drive train. Ideally, I'd have a Hollowgram with Praxis chainrings on my CAAD10 which would then be outfitted with whatever groupset I could get (Campy or Shimano).

Awesome news! So it appears I could upgrade my bike to Campy 11 speed (mix of Athena and Chorus) for about $650 + Freehub cost or Shimano 11 speed for about $1000 (upgrade kit and new wheels). Campy 11 speed with new wheels costing around $1150 + Freehub cost, but I could utilize two sets of wheels for training, indoor training, and backup.

Thank you very much!

You need to swap the crank or rings in the dark, so the shifters and FD don't notice what's going on.
