Brifters vs. Downtube shifters

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd love a cannondale. But not right now. Going for an affordable, durable first roadie.

The Mirage is a good one. It's easy on the eyes, relatively fast, steel framed, and smooth pedaling. You'll like it a bunch.

Joe, this thread has drifted quite a bit from the original OP. Personally, I like the idea of road bikes for commuting. Heck, I like 'em for everything. DT shifters, Shimano 2300.. doesn't matter IMO. To me a road bike has built in slickness. It enables me to fly down the road.

None of these systems are overly complicated. Whatever works.

How can we possibly get another 20 pages of arguing with reasonable people like you getting in the way ?!?!

3) You can swap out brake levers for comfort far more easily. TRP RRL brake levers are as comfortable as my Campy levers, if you want to spend that $50 on something down the road. If you go 2300, you will have 2300 ergonomics for ever.
4) You can shift DT shifters brilliantly with practice in friction mode, especially 8 speed. With practice, 2300 shifters will remain 2300 shifters.

I agree with RollCNY. I'm not a competitive rider and like the simplicity of DT shifters. Nothing bad or expensive has ever happened to a DT shifter on any bike I've owned.

He does not have much money and the fact is the Cad is a lot of bike for the money.

The only DT lever I ever broke was Campagnolo.

Had to put the cable in my teeth and shift by nodding my head all the way home.

We have come a long way but I am sure someone embracing old will say that it is simple and better. It is also says campy so it has to be better.

I wouldn't mind using that tire. Don't make 'em like that anymore.

Why does the tire looked bulged and the tire rim interface look irregular?

It's a tubular that is not pumped up, so it's flopped around a bit. Setas were great race tires.
