Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gloves are like condoms...you don't need to wear them on every ride, but you better not guess wrong.

I treat gloves like a piece of safety equipment and wear them in all seasons. I don't know how often people in the 41 crash, but I probably take at least a couple spills a year and virtually all of them have involved my hands in some way. I can live with road rash in various places but torn up palms are the worst.

I prefer unpadded gloves but it's whatever floats your boat.

Sweat control, Snot control, more comfortable, prevents very uncomfortable abrasions; What's not to like?

Only time I don't wear gloves is time trialing, given some wind tunnel data that says it's worth a few seconds.

My personal preference is always wear gloves and 95% of the time they're full finger ones even when it's 100 degrees out.

I used to wear gloves every ride... but after a while they disintegrated and I haven't yet replaced them. After 2 years without, my only comment is that my hands get dirtier.

Full fingers in winter for added warmth. Fingerless the rest of the time. Only time without is on the trainer.

I wear a helmet, eye protection, and a pair of gloves on every ride. Distance and weather do not factor into whether or not I wear them, only which ones I wear.

Sounds like I will be buying gloves, to help with sweat and less pressure on my palms. I think this should help with the recent bike fit just had done.

When it reaches 40-45 degrees so my fingers don't get cold. Sometimes in rainy 50 degree weather.

Not as crazy as riding with no helmet.
Yeah... if you stick out your hands and slide them on the asphalt instead of rolling until you stop.

I wear gloves only if its cold. I hate the padding though.

I have always worn gloves but I think at times about trying some gloveless rides later this year just to experiment.

Let me count the ways (thinking back over the last 10 years or so):
Washing out on wet pavement, washing out on snow, hitting mystery potholes at night, avoiding drivers doing dumb things, getting hit by said dumb drivers, doing dumb stuff myself like missing a curb-cut on a bike lane, leaping pedestrians, learning to use clipless pedals. That's the on-road stuff, then when I go off-road I do tend to push the limits of my abilities.

I grew up skiing and riding singletrack so I see crashing as inevitable part of the activity. Any spill you can ride/walk away from is a good one so that's why I wear gloves

. inattentive driver takes you out

And, for singletrack riders

. chose wrong line and lodged front wheel, endo-ing
. too much speed, couldn't hold line, hitting tree or other obstacle
. stall on steep climb
. fail on bump/jump over obstacle
. sand/ice wash out

Yup. I always wore half finger gloves in warmer weather, but I now have a few scars on my hands above the glove line from a crash last September.

Full finger from now on, no matter how hot.

I've been thinking just the opposite. I live in South Florida so I have a year round tan, looks weird having cycling hand tan lines (which I am proud of though). Maybe I should just ride once a week in the sun with no gloves.

I enjoy riding without gloves but i usually ride with them for safety/warmth. I wasnt wearing them on my last bmx crash, and every knuckle was ripped off onto the concrete.

Snot? Really? Learn how to launch a snot rocket.

FYI I wear gloves around 90% of my riding time.[/QUOTE]

That for me is 90% of the reason I wear them in Florida.
