I got hit by a motorist last Wednesday
 

9 broken ribs, burst appendix, broken scapula, broken fibula, and a collapsed lung. I'm still in the hospital, I can't tell you how the bike made out.

I don't have many details of the impact, but the dually pickup towing mirror is what hit me while riding in the bike lane. The driver and other witnesses assisted until the paramedics arrived.

Lots of pain, but the doctors all expect a full recovery. :thumb:

Errrg, those are some serious injuries, at least you are breathing and above the flowers and dirt. Glad that the driver and witnesses didn't abandon you and that you got to hospital in time. I've done the ruptured appendix thing, that one is scary and took a long, long time to get over. I'll have you in my prayers for a complete recovery, please keep us posted on how you are coming along.

Definitely sounds like an insurance claim, and potentially a lawsuit is in your future. Thus, I wouldn't post anymore about this accident, or your condition. Short objective update, like letting people know you're out of the hospital would be ok, but no editorial on how your doing, or how the accident happened.

We lawyers actually do search forums and social media.

I've had a few serious wrecks(both were life threatening) but neither of them were as painful as this one.

Today is starting out well, I took my first poop in the last 96 hours, and think I have turned the first corner to recovery.

Edit: I bet when you get out of the hospital, you'll still be faster than me.

Don't push it and listen to those guiding your recovery. I've had all of the injuries you listed. Broken bones are one thing but a collapsed lung is no joke.

I hope you are back on two wheels in due time.

It's nice to see that you're alive. I got off easy when I was hit back in November with only four broken bones.

I went down one Saturday ago while descending a local mountain. Had to get medevaced to the regional trauma center. I'm perfectly fine - just a little tired than usual. The headaches seem to go away when I workout.

That'll be a no-brainer "policy limits" settlement in the fullness of time. Really, while you don't want to get TOO verbose about it on the Internet, your injuries are such that they are indisputable and well documented. So... while normally STFU is the mantra, just keep in mind in the ensuing months of rehab and PT that you don't post overly-positive things based on the euphoria of getting a functional body back. Other than that just do what your lawyer says. Oh, get an injury lawyer ASAP or at least go talk to a few, when you are up and moving again.

Now, you are rooting for the driver to be carrying a really good policy. While injuries of your type might prompt your lawyer to go after them BEYOND policy limits, that's tougher waters to navigate. Hopefully the driver has at least a 100k liability policy. I think you'll get policy limits even if they have a 250k policy.That's separate from the medical and ongoing PT over the next year+ which will be entirely paid for.

I navigated the claims process with injuries much harder to document than yours and (rightfully) got a policy limits settlement. Take care of business and in a year or 18 months you'll be banking fat stax. Not that you'd trade the money for your health, but at least there's that in your future.

Yep, I pedaled about 600 miles in February. I'm still pretty nervous out there and still have a bad taste in my mouth, but I'm trying to make this work. What else am I going to do with the rest of my life?
