A nice bike these days is $4000- $10,000 depending on how you feel about brand name frames, carbon fiber rims, and electronic shifting. 11 speed Campagnolo cassettes and chains are $110 and $30 (+$3 for a KMC missing link) respectively. That math is pretty easy even when you don't include the cost of space to store more bikes.

I live and ride in SoCal--every day is a perfect riding day for any of my bikes.

My good bike (Roubaix 6800) gets the nod unless its really wet out. Then I ride Fred, cause he's got fenders, plus the brake tracks are already trashed.

But the new Roubaix is in pretty disreputable cosmetic condition right now. Covered in dirt and little pine needles.

I was lucky enough to be in PDX for that weekend. It started with freakishly cold windchills, then the snow!

And, no, I didn't ride in the snow as I wasn't prepared for it. You gotta admit, they did pick the worst day possible! For those who haven't seen the KOIN video, it was really too slick to even run in:

Yeah. Peeps can laugh, but that was a NASTY storm. It did a lot of damage to the trees around here. Power was out for us for a day, and lots of others here for several days. They opened up the showers at the high school. The raw physics of the storm might have been the most intense I've seen in my 25 years here... when the 1/4" of freezing rain fell on the 10" of wet snow, the conditions were basically unrideable- would have been insane to hold the ride. Like criminally insane. Maybe even illegal; down here they had I-5 restricted to "chains only" status.

With that said you Midwest and NE folks are....... are...... living in a challenging climate. And the SALT! Ugh.

Personally I only use the "nice bike". Even when it is wet and cold. I figure it is just a bike. Even though it is a nice bike, it is not nearly as expensive as some people's bikes on this site (<2.000 euros). I am guessing that for some people, my "nice bike" is the kind of bike they use when they do not want to use their nice bike.

We still have a few feet of snow and the roads are a mix of nice and clear or packed with snow and icy... will be riding the winter bikes for a while yet.

I wish I had been in PDX for the Worst Ride of The Year... had friends who went and rode anyways despite having most people bail out.

Mind you, in PDX the cyclists are like the drivers and many are ill equipped for that level of snow and ice while we just like to call that Saturday.

A big turn in the weather has resulted in some of the main roads drying off pretty well in the last two days. I put in 50 miles on the winter bike yesterday (1990s steel hybrid with fenders, Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires and a rear rack) but if the weather holds, the winter bike will get its summer tires (it becomes my Plan B, foul weather bike) and the road bike will come out soon. Like Cookiemonsta, my "nice" bike probably cost less than some people's beaters.

I generally agree though I do have a cheap hybrid with fenders and a rack that I ride for local store trips. Once the wet is gone I ride my carbon road bike.

I got caught in a passing storm last summer on the Ridley; only time its ever seen rain. The De Rosa is my go-to, weather isn't so great bike.

Not a case of "people bailing out", the event was officially cancelled (technically they said "postponed until 2015", this year's entry fees will be applied to next year).

When I got my first really nice bike last October -- 2014 Domane 5.2 -- I had friends ask what I was going to ride in the winter. I gave them a funny look. If the tires can handle the road surface, then I ride the Domane. That's why I bought it. I even had it on some damp dirt roads yesterday. Plenty of fun to be had. I clean off the drive train, brakes and brake tracks on the wheels and then relube after rides, but the underside of the frame is no longer white. I hope to clean that up this coming weekend.

Now if road or trail conditions warrant, then I've got the CX bike or mountain bike. But that's not about protecting the Domane; that's about using the right tool for the job.

When i'm not doing a recovery ride on the bike path.

I ride my main bike 90% of the time. I can put Race Blade on my main bike if it is wet. I clean it when it gets salty, sandy or whatever.

i did have an older wheelset for winter but i cracked the rear rim so now i have half of a winter wheelset once they fill in some potholes i'll put my newer front wheel back on and nicer tires.

Just like my sports car, I always wait until after the first good rain storm to wash all the salt off the roads. Until then it's the bike I don't care about.

I ride my bike in all weather. I make sure I wash and lube it after a particularly dirty ride. If that's 4-5 times a week in bad weather, so be it. I enjoy the preventative maintenance.
