Shoes and cleats - same pedal
Have two road bikes and when riding with wife I can't wear regular bike shoes due to low speed and frequent stops to "look around". Have pair of old cleats and looking for ideas for material I can screw cleat to that will make a suitable platform for hiking shoes. Changing pedals almost daily not an option.

Or the 2 sided SPD "campus" pedals. Platform on one side; clipless on the other.

What kind of pedals are you using? I've used Look and Shimano and both are big enough that you can ride on them with regular tennis shoes if you aren't going too far or too fast.
Maybe something like this would work? Bikedabs pedaldabs platform adapters convert bicycling clipless pedals |
Yeah. I use SPDs with touring or mtb shoes for tourist type riding where walking will figure in significantly. Another option is to set up your heavy rain/touring bike with flat pedals to get a better workout while riding with the wife.

Speedplay has platform adaptors for X series.

Just put the cleats in the pedals without the shoes, the topside of the cleat is a good platform

Hi ctpres
We feel your pain. We actually invented a product to solve exactly this problem. Fly Pedals is a universal clipless pedal adapter. It will clip into your clipless pedals, the same way your cycling shoes do, and offer a platform for you to ride on with your hiking boots or other casual shoes. You can see a video of how they work on our website. They do a great job squeezing extra utility out of your favorite road bike or mountain bike. Plus they are awesome for encouraging commuter riding and the casual ride around the neighborhood. We hope Fly Pedals help! |

I ride single speed when with my wife because a) platforms and b) she hates hills. |
nine month tour on spds as only shoe. never even thought about needing something else. somebody's got the wrong shoes is all.

The obvious solution here is to divorce your wife, then all your biking problems will be solved.
