Adhesive backed bar tape, Cinelli Caleido

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Adhesive backed bar tape, Cinelli Caleido

I rewrap the handlebars on our bikes once or twice a year. I cut my teeth on the Cinelli ribbon style tape in the 80's. I still like the look, but have been using the gel/cork stuff recently. I've never used adhesive backed tape before, and am considering using the Cinelli Caleido tape this year, which has an adhesive back. Cinelli Original Caleido Handlebar Tape White Multi | eBay I'm a bit of a perfectionist when I wrap the bars, and wrap/unwrap/rewrap a lot during the process. I'm concerned that I won't be able to unwrap/rewrap with the adhesive backed Caleido tape. Can I just wrap the Caleido tape while leaving the adhesive covering in place, or would this make the tape too bulky or slippery. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

I've used adhesive Cinelli tape before-- dunno if it was the same Caleido-- and other adhesive backed tapes, and I've yet to run across one which could not be easily unwrapped and re-wrapped multiple times for perfect placement. The adhesive is more tacky than sticky, if that makes sense; should be no problem for you to wrap with your usual techniques.

There is a limit to the abuse the adhesive strip can take, but you are not likely to reach it. After a while in place it tends to set and resists unwrapping without tearing off the tape say a month later. But for your initial placement you should not have a problem.

What rpenmanparker said matches my experience with various adhesive-backed bar tapes.

Bar tape is such a rip off for what you get. The profit margin must be 10,000%

I have the caleido tape on 3 of my bikes. It's easy to wrap/unwrap/rewrap. In fact, the first time I used it, I ended up with a gap after a week and had to rewrap it. Which actually made it much easier to work with - it came out perfectly. I find that I need to stretch the caleido tape quite a bit to get it to work properly. The more stretch, the tighter it is, and the better it stays in place.

If you find it cheaper than $25, make sure to post up here. This is the best I could find about a month ago:

Agreed, but every spring, after I put fresh tape on, I feel like I have a new bike. Pretty cheap price for that feeling

I haven't used this tape specifically, but normally the adhesive strip runs down the center of the tape and is maybe 6mm wide, far less than the width of the bar tape. There's also a release layer over it. Some are plastic film and can be left on if you don't want to use the adhesive. Others have paper release layers which you can leave on, but they tear in places as you stretch the tape during installation.

Ordered this Cinelli Caleido Ribbon Black | eBay the other day. About 24 bucks shipped. Haven't received it yet, I'll report back once I do.

I received the bar tape yesterday, in oem packaging. It included the 2 rolls of Caleido tape, 2 lengths of Cinelli monogrammed finishing strips, and 2 bar end plugs. It didn't include the extra pieces of tape usually provided to wrap around the brakes.

It took about 5 days to get to me, Kansas to New York. Good seller in my estimation.
