Giro Empire Carbon Sole peeling off. Ever happen to any here?

1 Attachment(s)
Bought them back in Sept and now the carbon sole is peeling off at the fore foot area. Is this a common thing? I'm trying to determine if I should go with another pair of Giro Shoes or not.

last pair of shoes I had were Shimano R318. Still have them and fully usable but there's a small hole from a crash which annoyed me enough to justify me guying the Empires.

I've attached a picture.

Looks like the glue is failing. Workmanship not so good.

Signed,
Captain Obvious

f4rrest 03-24-14 10:32 PM

Damn. Time for toe covers.

superdx 03-24-14 11:43 PM

A bit of JB weld in that area will probably fix it forever

PS - Nice shoes, I'm thinking of buying the same :)

bahula03 03-24-14 11:59 PM

Quick check of mine, and everything looks ok. First time I've seen something like that in the reading I did leading up to buying mine as well. Should still be under warranty, no?

...waiting for someone to blame the laces.

mr209204 03-25-14 02:10 AM

@superdx They're great shoes! The lacing is great for anyone that has, in my case, a slightly wide foot but doesn't necessarily need a shoe designed for a wide foot. You can skip holes and tie knots at certain sections to hold tension an even tension (toe box).
@bahula03 yup still under warranty. I was just curious to see if it was a common thing. I can't be the laces because I skip a section of holes right over that area and then tie a knot right above those holes so that the tension is always the same in that area.
@f4rrest I've got toe and shoe covers but its not going to help keep that sole on....

Thanks for the replies. They're greatly appreciated.

I guess I'll attribute it to WATTS! haha

chaadster 03-25-14 06:43 AM

I'd go for the warranty replacement on those right away. If it happens to the new shoes, too, then maybe try the fix suggested by Superdx, provided you're otherwise addicted to the shoe. They do have a unique style, but yet you don't have to accept a shoe that pulls apart. Unless, of course, you're just off-the-charts watts-wise! :)

Looigi 03-25-14 07:22 AM

Cool shoes. I want a pair. I'd be inclined to believe it's either a one-off quality issue or unusual use case.

SpeshulEd 03-25-14 08:17 AM

I have over 5,000 miles on my empires and do not have this issue. My toe guard fell off when I crashed my bike and the carbon soles are scratched from walking on rocks, but nothing like this.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for you to get the limited edition gold empires.

superdx 03-25-14 12:58 PM

Man that's some bling. You would need to wrap your handlebars in gold to match.

paulie719 03-25-14 01:58 PM

Giro Empire Road Shoes - Cycling Shoes

FYI...performance bike has the silver version on sale for $150

I just can't bring myself to drop another $300 on a pair of road shoes when I already have two pair, but damn, they're sexy.

I would love to get a pair of those. Except that I still have 2 pairs of the LTD blue from last year........

Anyone want a new pair of sz 45? :)

The LTD blue ones are the ones I crashed. Other than the toe guard, they're fine. 374 or 400!

I also grabbed the camo spd empire's...and the ltd blue shimanos. I have a shoe buying problem. I was hoping they'd do a ltd run of the black/pink empire's that Taylor Phinney has, but no luck so far - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a first friday sale during the Giro this year. Seems like that would be an appropriate time to do it.

The white and gold are a LTD run together with Competitive Cyclist, not going to be sold anywhere else. I'm also hoping for some more colors though...... they showed a whole bunch more color combos in the last bike show (cannot remember which one).

@bt not really but being organized in a post is very helpful to people I am responding to.
@chaadster dont know exactly what kind of power I output but it was enough to win me a Garmin 510 bundle from Interbike 2013 at the Garmin booth. Contest was to see who can output the most power with the most even left/right pedal strokes in 20 seconds.

I'm sending in the shoes for warranty. Place I bought it from said they don't have the silvers anymore but do have the black/matte and black/yellow which means I'll be getting a alight upgrade yay! Using my spare Shimano R315's until then

The white/gold looks amazing but damn....I really don't need another pair of shoes. Plus I would hate to get those dirty.

Dang-ee, scared of you!

Come on, tell us though, what was the winning output?!

There is hope!

Glad to hear Giro is going to take care of you. My Empires have been edging out my old Sidi's lately. I've heard people say that Sidi's feel like slippers; nah - these Empires feel like slippers! So light, stiff and comfy.
Rocking the patent leather black ones-unfortunately it's still mostly been overshoe weather here.

First Friday 50 has brown empire's this week. Not the pink ones I was hoping for. However, at $400, I don't mind skipping this one.

For that extra, extra retro look.

What is old is new again.... Must be a millennial thing you know. :)

Hot! My blue ones are slowly becoming destroyed. I haven't been very kind to them.
