what kind of music?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This one has been done before, and the answers were mostly along metal and techno lines.

Oddly, no one fessed up to show tunes, American Idol, or John Philip Sousa.

IMO it's absurd to wear headphones on the road.
On the trainer, I watch movies and sprint during the action scenes.

i'd fess up to show tunes, only i don't listen to music on the road...

when yer a jet, yer a jet all the way,
from yer first cigarette to yer last dying day...

my favourite musical of all time, though bas to be marc blitzstein's the cradle will rock:

Maybe you wonder what it is
Makes people good or bad;
Why some guy, an ace without a doubt,
Turns out to be a bastard,
And the other way about.
I’ll tell you what I feel:
It’s just the nickel under the heel.…

Oh, you can live like Hearts-and-Flowers,
And every day is a wonderland tour.
Oh you can dream and scheme
And happily put and take, take and put….
But first be sure
The nickel’s under your foot.

and then... is another number...

They won’t buy our milkwhite bodies,
So we kinda sell out in some other way –
To Mr. Mister...

Depeche Mode, The Prodigy, some other hi-tempo stuff..... I listen to music on the road, but just as background noise down low enough that I can hear the traffic. On my trainer it's mainly movies, and some music videos (Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, ABC), I'm obviously a child of the 80's......

On the trainer, I mix it up quite a bit, but the best stuff for me tends to be pretty bangin' - Korn, Tool, Black Sabbath. I'm actually a pretty big acoustic guitar fan too, but I'm amazed at how SLOWLY the time passes listening to that stuff. It's like entering another dimension where time goes by at 1/4 speed. Weird.

I don't listen to music on the road - whatever the last song I heard on the radio plays, over and over and over again in my head. I hate that!!

You just gotta make sure the last song you heard was a good one.

I have never listen music when riding on the road cause it is a bit dangerous thing but at home on the trainer the situation is changed so I prefer very high volume, high tempo musics, which is nice for my motivation.

I just started using my MP3 player while riding, I was a little worried first but found it to be no problem at all. If I was ever in a high traffic area I took out the left earbud. Most of the time it wasn't even neccassary I could hear fine with them.

Oh and music, Folk,

I listen to music in one earbud from the iPod on some road rides. Usually more during the long base period. Originally I had the problem of only hearing half of the stereo (you get some weird stuff sometimes with only one channel). I have a "ride list" playlist in iTunes, I converted it all to mono, so the same thing comes out both earbuds and its the whole track.

What do I listen to? I'll pick out some highlights:

Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
Montrose - Rock Candy
Orgy - Revival
Rammstein - Keine Lust
Tool - Prison Sex

There's about 5 hours worth of songs, but that covers the range.

Linkin Park Reanimation. It's just over an hour in length so when it's over I know I'm done. I only listen to music on the trainer - never on the road.

When Im doing winter base I listen to a lot of solemn mellow alt-country (drive by truckers, wilco, old 97's) when I start doing more tempo stuff and ride the hills I like more rock but mostly hip hop (a tribe called quest, notorious BIG, jay z, nas). I know I know I have a wide variety of interests. When I listen on the road I only put in one head phone (in the ear furthest from traffic, usually my right).

Beatles, Nothing like a Hard Days Night to get you hammering.
Elton John and Billy Joel.

If I really want a work out I listed to Aerosmith, Doobie Bros, Kiss and Lynard Skynard.

I feel kind of compelled to answer the people that state how dangerous it is to listen to music while riding on the road. It was a real life experience that taught me not to spend time reflecting <worrying> about the "danger" of enjoying tunes while riding.

It was in 1991, and I was a young Marine stationed in Iwakuni, Japan. I was tooling along very aware of my surroundings when I felt an impact on my rear wheel. As I was headed down to the ground (in my toe clips) I had an instant to look up and right and see an OLD Japanese "gentleman" driving the Asian version of a Lexus coupe looking down at me blankly. He continued driving as I slid along on the asphalt, ripping the sleeve from my jacket and tearing up all exposed skin on my left side (except my grape- I was wearing a helmet). The slide stopped when I hit a curb.

The lesson I learned was that no matter what the circumstances you have very little control on what is going on around you. And if you are going to be hit, it will happen no matter what.

I am certain that he hit me intentionally, and even if I knew he was there before he hit me I would have had no chance of avoiding it.......

So if you enjoy music and it helps you to pass the time and focus, enjoy your music and your ride.

....As opposed to the non-asian version of a Lexus? Sorry to break this to you, but Lexus = Toyota = Japanese company. Good story though.

I hear Devil Take the Hindmost by Allan Holdsworth without needing headphones - or his Three Sheets to the Wind or Non-Brewed Condiment, Point of Many Returns by Sam Rivers, Mahavishnu's Birds of Fire or Vital Transformation; this list is long.

That's funny because I have a playlist on my iPod that's select Linkin Park songs from all of their albums - 1 hour 20 minutes for my 22 minute loop.

KYLIE MINOGUE... I have her 3 concert DVDs and I watch em on the trainer...

I'm also really down because she just started her newest world tour yesterday (The Showgirl Tour)... in Ireland I think... it's not coming to the U.S. -- just Europe, Asia and Australia.

Damn me!!!

My current playlist has alot of Zeppelin (Jon Bonham kicked ass). When the Levee Breaks has been the most motivational workout tune for me for many years, and Ramble On keeps me going. Out of my 400 or so CD's, lately its been older Beasties, Bob Marley, Jack Johnson, Rage Against the Machine, and Towns Van Zandt, among many others.

Yup, but over there they don't have "Toyota" or "Lexus" printed on the car anywhere. These just had (been a few years since I was there) a really interesting "dragon" like badge on the front and a model number on the back.

I know Lance listens to his iPod on the road at times, but that doesn't make it right. <shudder> A total danger to yourself and others.

To get pumped-up for riding I'll put on something with a strong beat. A recent favorite is the music from the club scene in "Collateral". I suppose if I had a trainer, it'd be about the same.

I really think you are wrong. If you wear an earbud that doesn't go inside you ear, ie noise reducing, and you don't play it too loud, I don't see how that could be any more dangerous then listening to the radio in your car. I know for a fact that when riding my bike even with music I can still hear better then when I am in my car.

Why are bicycilsts so obsessed with danger?

I have to agree with gattm99. I listenin to my ipod when I'm riding alone and it seems that I seem to pay a lot more attention to traffic and surroundings than when I am riding with a group and conversing amongst the group.

By the way gattm99 since I listened to your band you need to listen to this one:
