1995 Vitus ???
I had posted on this site a while ago about a 2014 Fuji Sportif 2.1 road bike I was set on purchasing. Unfortunately, my budget has tightened since then and it's now out of my range. I'm now looking at a 1995 Vitus 992 Record for $375 (asking price on craigslist). Yes, I know, big change from looking to purchase the Fuji, however, I am really excited to get into biking and this bike looks like it was a solid bike in its time. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It was a big bike in it's time. The chief complaint is the bike flexes a lot. It's made of small diameter aluminum tubing with bonded joints. Compare that with the large diameter Cannondales of the same period, which feel as stiff as a brick.

If its a carbon Vitus tube frame, I think it's an 888. I had the all aluminum 979, and it was known to be a noodle. At the time I was under 140lbs, so stiffness wasn't a concern of mine.
I wouldn't buy one as a primary ride, but would love to find one have as rideable art.

Those bikes couldn't have sucked any harder. I had one. Trust me on this.

You can still buy these frames, new old stock, which tells you something.
Classic Bike Vintage Bikes Frames and Parts
Besides the frame being very whippy, you're likely to develop an irish accent so thick that your speech will be virtually unintelligble.

bengit-I'd pass on the Vitus; stick with lugged steel for that vintage and older; or else keep hunting for a good deal on an entry-level road bike with more contemporary tech. Periodically check out performance, nashbar and bikesdirect sites for sales and deals.
