What's the fastest you've ridden?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speed comes easy on steep descents. I hit 40 on the hill just down the road. I usually dont get aero because it is so steep and short run with the stop sign waiting for me. I looked down at the gps and it wasnt lying. Yikes, time to brake.

60mph on a downhill; got passed by a tandem.

On the flats, 30 mph in a paceline. I was hanging on for dear life, spinning like a mad fool. It didn't last long, maybe a couple of miles. I was glad we hit that little hill and our paceline broke up.

I am by no means a fast rider nor do I have that much endurance but it is fun to crank it up like that sometimes.

Fastest downhill was yesterday on the Blue Ridge Parkway - 45.3mph. The grade was decent but I still had to spin out a 50x12 to get there.

As as for flat land, I am not much of a sprinter. My best so far is right around 32mph. Given my body type and natural strengths.....I don't see this number changing much in the future.

Perhaps it's different on a road bike, but you people are nuts!

33.9 downhill on my Giant Escape. Did it twice now, exactly 33.9 mph both times, on the same short hill and it was fast enough for me.

Unsure, I buried my speed odometer that maxed out at 50mph - while living in Germany. As soon as I realized I was going at least 50, I got scared and slowed down.

I don't put much store by my Strava speeds, it always records a higher max than my Cateye. I can't help thinking this is because the interpolation in the (as far as I've hard) 5 second intervals between checks on Strava's GPS signals is less accurate than the multiple magnet signals per second of my Mity8.

I've also had Strava tell me on winding descents that my average speed for that road was higher than my max speed. Presumably due to the difference between the length of the designed segment and the actual line taken in descending.

I saw 48mph on my cateye once going down Oakville Grade, and highly recommend that anyone who wants to go downhill fast try it out at least once.

45mph since I downloaded strava last week. Behind a car for most of the way down. I reckon I could get to 50 or more if it was clear. Not safe to go too fast with cars around... I got hit by a bus last year and I think I'm emotionally scarred haha

52mph. Short steep downhill, huge tailwind, group sprinting for the drop off point (higher 30's when we started downhill). There were guys moving past me at 52 so I'd imagine that some of them hit closer to 55mph.

Did 45 going down a nice hill in the Badlands. It was quite an experience with the rugged beauty of the Badlands as my backdrop, but I'm a wuss. I'll keep it under 40 from now on.

42mph on the flat. This number came from the cop who caught me on radar and called it out of the window as I blew past. Gale-force tailwind. I could have gone faster except I had run out of gears.

Downhill: 53mph coming down Highwood pass in Alberta. No tucking required. The road had been cleared of snow, but not yet opened for cars. Huge tailwind, and being at 7,000 ft helps. Despite the absence of vehicles, I still scared myself. At the warp speed part of the descent, I vaguely picked out a brown object on the right shoulder. It was behind me before I could formulate any kind of avoidance plan. It turned out to be an large elk, which could have simply bounded out on the the road in front of me.

If anyone thinks they are fast, then check out this:

Mont Ventoux - Malaucène descent (Max. 117.5km/h) - YouTube

Like I said I'm new so 41 mph was a wild ride for me. Ran out of hill and slowed. I'm not interested in going much faster downhill but now I have some numbers to work towards on the flats. Thanks.

That guy is nuts. He doesn't care if he has to run oncoming cars off the road, he's not slowing down for anybody.

Awesome video!

I posted about this video some time ago, and while it was at times thrilling to watch, bottom line is that a 160lb rider going through a car windshield will kill people inside the car, he was putting other people at risk on an open road as he did.

The fastest I have done is just over 70km an hour. Some people I know have gone way faster than this on the same (downhill) roads, but to be honest, this is about the max speed I am willing to go on a road that I share with other cyclists, cars etc. At 70km/h I feel in control, any faster and I feel like I am just hoping I wont die that day.
